Lenny saves the day

Adam was staring after Lenny. The poor man had had a terrible day. First he finds out that his mother is dead and then he sees a countless amount of teenagers get shot, some dying, before he's held hostage by the gunman.
He slowly walked into reception. Everyone was crowded around the television. Tess had tears streaming down her face as they watched the news report of the shooting. Zoe was silently swearing and the others were stood in complete silence.
He slowly walked up to Tess and placed an arm on her shoulder before she spun round and gave him a watery smile.
(Adam) "Have you seen Lenny?" He asked
(Tess) "No. He disappeared. The one time we needed him and he decides to become squeamish of blood. Typical, he never learns…!" Replied Tess angrily.
Adam looked around at everyone. Studying each of their faces. Did they really not trust Lenny? Did they really think he would just abandon them? Even Polly looked angry. They were all horribly wrong.
"No Tess, you're wrong. He didn't run away, he didn't abandon you." He said quietly. His words seemed to echo around the room.
"What do you mean? Adam…?" This time it was Kirsty. She was holding in tears. He looked around. Everyone was confused.
"After he shot the girl, the shooter didn't leave. He ran into one of the cubicles and held the gun to his own head."
"And? I heard the police stopped him"
It was Noel. Him of all people. I thought he was Lennys' friend?
"No Noel, they didn't stop him. Lenny did" I paused to let it sink in. "He saw the teenager run into the cubicle and knew what was going to happen. He didn't want anymore blood spilt shooter or not. He talked him down. Told him that he had to live instead of taking the cowards' way out while his victims and all the doctors and nurses were suffering. He told him how he had watched kids die and that it would always haunt him. He told the teen that everyone thinks of him as the ultimate joker, the pranker, the stupid one. He has feelings too. And his life hasn't been as easy as everyone expects."
"What to you mean?" asked Charlie. He seemed to be the first one to recover.
"He was left on the door of a childrens home when he was eight. He never saw his mum, dad, sister, or brother again. Then he got a call the other day from someone he thought was his mother. It was a funeral home. His mother died last week and he only found out today. Then he found out his sister has a life threatening illness. She has nine months left. He's going to give her bone marrow. She will die eventually, but it will give her more time. He told me that when he was being held hostage by the shooter, he would have rather he had been shot than watches another innocent person die. He doesn't think anyone cares about him. You only know the joker. You don't know the Lenny that he wants you to see"
Everyone was stunned. Adam looked to the left Lenny was standing in the door of the staffroom. He smiled weakly at Adam and slowly walked past the others.
"Oh…" Breathed Tess. Everyone was silent.
