Hi all! Here is a little drabble I wrote about my own OC character receiving her first Hogwarts letter :) Enjoy!
It was a peaceful night in London under the velvet black sky, the stars shining brilliantly those millions of miles away. The nights in London were usually calm with a gentle breeze, only enough to see the leaves of the trees rustle faintly – but tonight was different. It was rather tranquil, but it was the darkest it had ever been. As a young Lucy looked out her window of her small family home, she couldn't help but feel like tonight would be different; that when the morning came around, something strange yet incredible would happen.
When Lucy rose that morning, the sun shone brilliantly and the day was clear. The birds chirped in the trees outside her window, the quiet morning traffic along the small street her house was situated on went by silently, and she could hear the faint clatter of dishes from the kitchen. She changed herself out of her nightwear and into her day clothes, then padded her way down the stairs to the kitchen where she found her mother preparing a spread of bacon and eggs.
Her mother placed a plate on the bench for Lucy as she climbed onto the stool. As she contently ate her breakfast, she heard her father call from the hallway. "Mail's here!"
A moment later, he appeared through the doorway into the kitchen, flicking through the several envelopes they had received in the mail. Lucy noticed his face contort at one particular letter before handing it over to her.
"There's a letter here for you, Lucy. Though it looks a little peculiar."
Lucy took the letter from him and read the green cursive font on the envelope that was addressed to her. She looked at it curiously, then turned it over to open it, only to first take a moment to study the red seal on its back. It had a crest on it, decorated by four animals: a raven, badger, lion and serpent. She gently removed it and took out the letter, reading it out loud to her parents:
"HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)
Dear Miss L. Chambers,
We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress"
Once she finished, she looked at her parents with wide eyes. "I'm a witch?" was all she could get out.
Her parents exchanged a glance of surprise and her father stroked his chin. "How peculiar. If this letter speaks truth, you must have magic in your blood. What a strange thing…" he trailed off thoughtfully.
Her mother gingerly took the letter from Lucy's hand and looked over it. "What should we do? It's a rather odd letter to receive in the mail. It appears quite official, too." she said, speaking to her husband.
He gestured largely, throwing his arms out wide. "Why, we take her there, of course! What an opportunity! Imagine this world living in our world and we haven't even realised it! Goodness, we all must be blind as bats, yes?"
He took the list out of the envelope and read over it quickly before looking up and smiling proudly at his wife and daughter. "Go fetch your shawl, dear, and Lucy, your coat. We are taking a drive to Diagon Alley."
