Visions of Fate

Chapter 1: Darkness and the Light

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."

Edgar Allen Poe

Falling.

I was falling.

Or was I floating? I didn't know for sure.

The feeling of weightlessness wracked through my body. I felt sick. I was surrounded by total darkness combined with an unbearable silence. When I reached out, nothing could be felt. It was like I had been deprived of my senses, making me feel alone and afraid.

Eventually, I felt the ground beneath my feet. I still could not see, so I stood and waited.

That was when the whispering started. Different hushed voices circled around me indistinctly. They seemed worried and agitated, but I couldn't make out their words. The voices grew louder. I closed my eyes and put my hands over my ears. The sound was hurting my head.

"Stop it! Shut up!" I screamed.

The pain was unbearable. I fell to my knees. I felt so small. Weak.

Somebody help me...

All at once, a blazing light appeared from the darkness, blinding me. The dreadful shouts died out, and my pain subsided. I threw my hands up, shielding my eyes from the scorching light.

Malyssa...

I opened my eyes.

"Who said that?"

The light had become less intense. Its golden hues were warm and inviting.

I stood when a shadow crossed in front of the light. The figure was blurry and unfamiliar to me.

"Who are you?"

The figure made no move. I heard the voice again, louder this time. Coming from it. No. Coming from Him.

I am here for you, Malyssa. I always will be.

The voice was familiar, but I couldn't place where I had heard it before.

Before I could question his meaning, another voice spoke.

"Miss?"

It was the same voice, yet it sounded closer, more concerned, and slightly mechanical.

"Miss, can you hear me?"

Then everything faded back into darkness.
