Author's Note: This is an alternate version of the scene at the end of Tomatoes. The beginning comes directly from that scene (I don't own it obviously). Please review it if you like it and want me to continue it!

Nick was yelling. He had yelled at Jess before but never this loud and never this much. This was their worst fight. Jess couldn't help but think about all the times they'd screamed at each other.

How does he always manage to get under my skin? Jess asks herself. Why can't I just keep my mouth shut and let him live his life? Because he's ruining everything by sleeping with Caroline. She's no good for him. I know he thinks things are different now but he's just going to end up hurt and alone and I don't want that to happen to him. Can't he see that I know what's best for him?

She softens for a second. Just one second. And then continues to yell at him.

"Stop making that face!" She screams "I hate that face!"

She's waving her arms like a crazy person. The fight is getting worse and worse. There's no way Caroline can't hear this. But neither of them seems to be thinking about that.

"This is my only face! I don't have a lot of faces!" Nick yells back.

This is getting ridiculous, Jess thinks two reasonable adults should not be fighting like this.

But Nick is not reasonable. Not around Jess. And she isn't around him.

"And if you don't like looking at my face Jess..." Nick yells, his cheeks are getting red, unable to think about anything but how crazy Jess drives him.

But he stops.

He can't think of anything else to say.

Neither can she.

They stand there for a second. Just one second. Breathing heavily, it seems like neither of them has inhaled since their shouting match started.

"What?" Jess chokes out.

Nick looks at her questioningly.

"If I don't like looking at your face? Then what?" She asks, looking him right in the eyes. Taking in everything, his nose, his mouth...

"Then..." Nick has no idea.

Before she can stop herself Jess takes his face in her hands and kisses him. He seems surprised for a moment but responds, pulling her close. Her hands are in his hair and his are around her waist and this is exactly what she was missing with Russell. Exactly why he could never make her happy. Because-

"Nick?" Caroline calls through the door.

They spring apart. Jess's hand covers her mouth as if she can't believe what just happened. But it did happen, her cheeks are still raw from his scruff and her lips seem bruised.

His eyes widen and he looks between Jess and the door.

Jess looks at him, wanting to ask him to stay but knowing that she can't. What could she possibly give him that Caroline, the love of his life, couldn't? She remembers all the terrible things she said to him not seconds ago and the guilt crashes down on her. Not living up to his potential? That was so cruel. Who was she to tell him how to live his life when she could barely run hers?

She slumps in defeat and so does Nick who looks at her for a second, also searching for what to say.

Unable to make the decision, Jess makes it for him and runs into her room. Slamming the door behind her.
