Maidens of myth and legend

Prologue

Tai itskun was sat in her chambers meditating when she suddenly felt her room of mirrors calling out to her. "That's odd," she thought, as she popped there out of thin air. She seated herself on her favorite pillows and waved a hand before the biggest mirror, waiting patiently for the image to appear and when it did, she nearly fell off her pillow as the image of three young girls around the age of twenty appeared on the misty surface.

Chapter one: Tiercil, Mim and Gwenevere

"That's so beautiful," breathed Tiercil as she gazed through the window of the antique shop, "and just think, I only need a little bit more money until I can buy it." Gwen rolled her eyes towards Mim who was sat in a corner huddled over her laptop, her dark green hair falling in straggling wisps from the bun she had swept it into earlier that morning.

"Just hurry up and buy the damn thing already," grumbled Gwen, having not gotten the reaction she had wanted from mim and was already getting bored, "I still don't see why you have to continuously drag me and mim out here every day just so you can gaze at that damn bird." Gwen was twenty years old. Her hair was an odd colour. Instead of being blond or brown like other peoples, hers happened to be a rather bright in your face blue with eyes to match. She was also the most impatient member of the group. Tiercil was a week younger and was studying in an art college. Her hair was a red so bright it looked like fire when she walked out into the sunlight. Like Gwen her eyes were similar to her hair. They were a deep red-like brown which sparkled with laughter and mischief every time she smiled.

Tiercil shot a glare in Gwen's direction, "it's not just any bird you know Gwen," she sighed gazing back towards the window, "it's a phoenix, a bird of fire." "Yeah yeah, whatever," muttered the annoyed blue haired girl as she began to pace the path before the shop, "look can we go now. It's so boring here it's almost unnatural." Tiercil stuck out her tongue, only enraging Gwen even more.

Mim looked up from her laptop with a heavy sigh as the two began to brawl outside the doorway of the shop, a pass time which both happily engaged in, no less than twice a day.

"Yet another argument for me to pacify," she whispered, saving her work and packing the laptop away in order to separate the battling duo. "Oh come on you two, cant you at least get along for one day, huh?" she pleaded her emerald eyes glittering slightly with hidden amusement. "NO!" growled both Gwen and Tiercil in unison, yanking the poor girl into the fray.

In another dimension

Tai itskun was in a state of utter complete shock. These three brawling girls bore a striking resemblance to three of her sons, the beast gods Suzaku, Seiryu and Genbu. "But this is impossible," she thought, "they have never been in that world before, have they?" suddenly she remembered. Twenty years ago the same three gods had appeared before her pleading to be allowed to enter the world of the priestesses for a month in order to observe how different the two worlds were. After arguing with them for a week (and boy what a long tiring week it was, with one or all three gods nagging at you while you're trying to meditate), she relented and never regretted that decision until now.

"What in the universe of the four gods did these three get up to while they were visiting earth?" then she suddenly realized that she didn't even want to know. "Nyan nyan!" she barked. Instantly a cute little girl appeared in a big green bubble. "Yes, yes," she chirped bouncing up and down annoyingly in front of the old woman who was trying very hard to resist the temptation of kicking the little pest into orbit. "Go inform my sons' suzaku, seiryu and genbu that I wish to see them immediately." The little girl bowed and disappeared instantly. No sooner did she go did three handsome figures appear before their mother.

Suzaku in his fiery red best with wings folded gracefully at his shoulders, Genbu in robes of earthy green, his dark emerald hair swept back in an elegant ponytail, his very stance oozing wisdom and finally Seiryu in pale blue armor, his sharp eyes narrowed in impatience. All three blanched a pale green when their eyes fell upon the image in the mirror. They turned paler still when the saw the look of fury on the creators face.

"When I allowed the three of you to go to the priestess's world, what did I say right before you left?" all three gods cast their eyes down to the ground guiltily like a normal human child would. "Observe but under no circumstances do you interfere." Came the sullen reply from all three. Tai itskun glared at them, "well tell me this. If you knew very well what I said, why in the name of heaven and hell did you disobey it. Don't you realize I never make rules unless they are important?"

"But… but," stuttered Suzaku. Tai itskun held up her hand with a glare, "don't you even think about interrupting you over grown feather brain." Suzaku puffed up indignantly while seiryu sniggered silently from the opposite side of genbu. "Do you even realize that we now have three demi-goddesses on the loose who don't even know their true heritage let only the powers which they no doubt possess? Thanks to you three we know have to reopen the portal. These girls cannot be allowed to stay in their world with the powers they hold. They will have to be brought here and be taught how to control them. So now I have to call upon the remaining member's suzaku seishi once again since the others are not yet reborn."

"Wait a second," cried seiryu, "are you saying that those three girls are our daughters?" Tai itskun nodded. Genbu's eyes widened in shock while Suzaku was practically glowing With pride. "Look at my daughter, isn't she beautiful, a real chip off the old block. What are their names?" Seiryu rolled his eyes, but secretly paid attention.

"Suzaku, your daughter's name Tiercil, the green haired one is named Mim and one with blue hair and a bad attitude is of course your daughter Gwenevere." She said smiling as the dragon god seethed under his icy façade. "Now shall I bring them here for more proper introductions?" Not waiting for an answer she clapped her hands and instantly a haze of red, blue and green light appeared before them.

Mim looked around her in confusion as the surroundings around them changed from the side walk beside Tiercil's favorite shop to a room full of mirrors with four people gazing down at them, one being the ugliest old woman she had ever seen in her life. She heard a startled gasp behind her shortly followed by a screech of, "yaaaaaa it's a monster," which informed her that both Gwen and Tiercil were aware of the situation.

The old woman glowered down at Tiercil, who was the perpetrator of the "monster" comment. "Like father, like daughter, like seishi. I can definitely tell whose child you are. Tiercil I believe you are called." Tiercil only nodded briefly but suddenly became confused. "What do you mean father? I don't even know mine. " Tai itskun shook her head in defeat. Redheads are so dumb sometimes. Mim instantly got what Tai itskun was getting at and looked closely at the three men gathered in the room. She heard a gasp of shock from Tiercil's corner as she realized what this meant. "Are telling me that one of these guys is my dad?" she asked incredulously. The man in red stood forward, spreading his wings out for all to see. "Not just anyone," he smiled, pride glowing in his eyes, "me."

Tiercil's eyes widened in fright at the god, "you have got to be joking. No way are you my dad." Suzaku's eyes turned into a glare for an instant. "I never joke," he said in an intensely insulted voice. "They are definitely related. They both react the same to jokes," whispered Seiryu, sniggering as the two redheads argued about whether or not they were related. Tai itskun raised a heavily wrinkled eyebrow, "you've got no need to talk. Neither you or Genbu seem to have the courage to introduce yourselves to your own daughters."

Both Mim and Gwen gave her a look of shock, "what do you mean own daughters?" they both yelled. "I mean that not only is Tiercil meeting her father for the first time but so are you." Mim looked towards the two men stood beside the old woman, her eyes lingering on the green haired one who seemed to be the oldest, "I'm guessing you're my real dad," she asked with a heavy sigh. The man nodded serenely, "my name is Genbu. I am one of the four beast gods of this world." Tiercil looked up from her row and looked confusedly at both Mim and her newly discovered father. "What do you mean one of the four gods? Can someone explain to me what's happening here?" Seiryu rolled his eyes for what seemed to be the hundredth time that night.

"Allow me to explain," he drawled, his eyes fixed on his daughter, "me and my brothers are the deities of a realm called the universe of the four gods and you my dears happen to be our daughters." There was a loud bang as all three girls fell to the ground in a stupor. "Good going seiryu, that was definitely not a good way to break it to them," sniggered Suzaku, while Genbu shook his head in exasperation. The dragon glared at his brother, "like you could have done any better in my place," he hissed, baring a set of vicious teeth. Suzaku yelped and dodged behind Genbu who was looking wearier by the second.

After a few moments of uneasiness, the uncomfortable silence was broken by the arrival of a certain creator, who no one had seen disappear. "WAAAAAH!" screamed all three gods as they huddled as far away from their moth as possible. "Don't that," panted Suzaku, holding onto a grumpy Genbu, "I was so scared, I nearly laid an egg." Suddenly the room was filled with laughter as seiryu heard hi words and was now rolling around on the floor laughing, all dignity forgotten.

Tai itskun heaved a huge sigh and exchanged an exasperated with her eldest son. "Honestly you two. You're supposed to be gods not a pair of clowns." Suddenly her eyes fell upon the three girls still out cold on the floor. "WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE?" she bellowed. Seiryu winced slightly as his mother began to glare at them once more. "They kind of didn't understand about us, so we had to tell them," he said backing away from his mother all the while.

The old woman shook her head. "They have absolutely no tact at all do they," she thought, glaring at Seiryu in particular. "Any way, just though I'd tell you, Chichiri is on his way here. He just has to make a stop at Mt reikaku in order to collect a certain loudmouthed bandit," she trailed of her for a moment, muttering slightly under her breath about the little pest. Tai itskun and the bandit Tasuki were not exactly on friendly terms. Whenever he saw the old woman, he would immediately take fright and start yelling insults and swear words at her. Although she was by now used to this, (try living with nyan nyans constantly wanting to heal your face.) she still felt extremely irritated when he did it and often called him fang boy, a nickname in which he hates.

"As I was saying, they will be arriving shortly, somewhere around tomorrow morning, so take the girls to a room and allow them to rest until they arrive. Tomorrow we will decide who will tutor who and try and find someone suitable for the girl that's left." Seiryu began grumbling in the back. Tai itskun frowned in his direction once more, "I'm sorry but I didn't quite catch that, what you said?" she said fixing him with her hardest glare. Seiryu drew in a breath and took a poised stance. "I said, my daughter will never be taught by a Suzaku seishi."

Tai itskun's aura suddenly began to crackle as anger filled every line on her face, "your daughter will be tutored by whomever I see fit. DO YOU UNDERSTAND, MY STUPID, SCALY FRIEND?" she roared, her patience now at breaking point. Seiryu shrank back, nodding meekly as he and his brothers picked up a girl each and scurried out of her way. Now she was so angry, Tai itskun found it impossible to calm down and so went rampaging around her palace, sending a few nyan nyans into orbit as she went.
