Catch Me If I Fall
A/N: Wohoo, my first Tales of the Abyss story! Rather short, but whatever. I wanted to write a Jade/Anise one, but came up with this...Well, anyway, hope you enjoy. Much thanks to Picup for some last-minute questions. Oh, and this can be perceived as very slight Jade/Dist, if you so choose it. Read, review, ect.
"Hah! I've caught you at last!" Dist cackled. He looked down from his chair at the scene unfolding. His fon machines surrounded the group; they were completely outnumbered, he was delighted to see. "There is no escape. So what do you have to say now, Jade?"
Luke made a face. "Why does he always just talk to Jade? It's like the rest of us aren't even here…"
"I still don't know what you're talking about." Jade sighed and adjusted his glasses. "Are you sure that you don't have the wrong person?"
Dist pounded on the armrests of his chair in a mini-tantrum. "We were friends and you know it! Stop pretending!"
"Hmm…" Jade seemed to think about this for a second, and then shrugged. "Nope, sorry. You must be thinking of some other Jade."
"Grr! Now you just listen to me, you four-eyed…" He leaned forward menacingly, but his foot got caught on the leg of the chair. "Whoops-"
He started to fall down, headfirst, and heard his glasses shatter as they hit the ground.
flashback
"C'mon, Saphir, you can do it!" Peony slapped him on the back. "Don't be a scardey-cat. It isn't that far up off the ground."
Saphir gulped and looked up at the rope swinging between the rafters of the old attic. "Do I really have to go all the way up there?" he whispered to himself.
Peony grinned and nodded. "Yup. If you don't pass the test, you can't join the club! You do want to be one of my royal subjects, don't you?"
"Yeah! I mean, I do, but…" He trailed off, and then looked over at the other boy, who was standing between him and Peony. "Jade, do you promise to catch me if I fall?"
"Huh?" The brown-haired kid, Jade, looked down at him. "Sure, I promise."
end flashback
He landed with a thump on something –somebody. Groping around for his glasses (he was practically blind without them), he suddenly realized that he was not on the ground, but in the strong arms of Jade.
Fighting back a blush, he heard a slight chuckle very close to his ear. He turned his head around. Even without glasses, he could tell what those lips, so close to his, were mouthing. "I promised that I'd catch you," he said. And those words were all that he needed. Jade had kept his promise.
