Wang Yuanji could feel the heat rising to her face, spreading across her cheek bones as she shyly looked away from their intertwined hands. She pointedly stared at anything but the girl beside her, willing herself to believe that the girl didn't even exist and the warmth spreading through her body starting at their interconnected hands was just her imagination. She was becoming frustrated by the mere display of affection. It was embarrassing and unusual, people were staring at them. She wanted to run away and deny anything that someone else might have seen. Anything she might have felt. Just by simply holding her hand it felt as if she had let her defenses fall too far, and at any moment the girl could walk away laughing and take Yuanji's heart with her. And even though every part of her body was screaming for her to run, so much that it nearly ached; she didn't try to shake the girl off because she thought it would hurt her. Through her own insecurities, she knew deep down that she never wanted to hurt her.
Yuanji held her head up, staring straight ahead, and continued walking down the lantern-lighted path weaving in and out of people crowding around booths trying to win some sort of game. She snuck a glance at her, Lian Shi, and saw the small smile forming on her lips as she watched everyone enjoying themselves, she blushed again when she noticed how intently she'd been staring at Lian Shi's mouth.
Lian Shi, feeling Yuanji's glance on her, turned her head to stare up at her. Lian Shi's face lit up when their eyes met, and Yuanji's creeping anxiety that a god might smite her, melted away in an instant. For a moment she thought if Lian Shi were to run from her, stealing away her heart, she'd surely have to go after her. She'd go anywhere, just to protect her from the monsters that lurked in the shadows, and though Lian Shi could fend for herself, Yuanji wanted her to rely on her. To trust her.
"Thank you," Lian Shi said, wrapping her other arm around Yuanji's and resting her head against it. "For bringing me with you."
