"There's nothing on tv. At all," Kevin grumbles, flipping through channels. Hotel room tvs always sucked. Late night tv was even worse. He kept scanning channels, especially skipping over Paw Patrol. His kids love that show and he'd seen every episode more times than he could count. He nearly jumped out of the bed when she stuck a cold beer bottle to his arm, startling him. Becky was always playing some sort of joke on him.
"Beer's cold." She grinned, passing him one before plopping down in bed beside him.
"Yeah, I gathered as much." He replied before sighing and tossing the remote aside, giving up. It had landed on some infomercial for a juicer.
"First day off in weeks and can't find anything to do," He groaned.
"We could watch a movie." She offered, reaching for the remote. "There's gotta be something interesting on pay per view."
"I already looked. It's all kiddie movies. I'd rather not watch Frozen again."
She grinned before taking another draw from her beer. Sometimes she forgot Kevin had little ones at home. It was hard to imagine him in Dad mode. "Do you know the words to 'Let It Go'?"
"No and my life is better for it."
"Let's go somewhere. Pleeease." She urged, grabbing his hands in hers. She knows how he feels about going out. With a wife and kids at home, he was really uptight about he and Becky being too close around coworkers. Which Becky understood, but it still sucked. Not everyone understood their friendship. She spread out across the bed and lay her head in his lap.
"Let's just drive, see where we end up. Let's go on an adventure."
Kevin played with her hair as he considered it. "We do enough driving as it is, don't ya think?"
"Yeah but from A to B. Let's go get lost."
"I don't know if getting lost in California is a good idea." He mused. "Besides, it's like four in the morning."
She pouted, crossing her arms over her chest. "Fine, we'll watch Frozen. I haven't seen it yet." He shot her an evil glare and she giggled.
"Fine. We'll go. But I drive. And I pick the music. Grab a coat." As they left the hotel he looked something up on his phone. He had a hunch.
.
He'd forgotten about the rental car. They'd be cruising around in a Prius. At least it was black. The radio channels where shit, and he flipped back and forth as he drove them out of the hotel parking lot. Rap music. Country music. Kevin loathed all of it.
"Just drive. I'll find something." She offered.
He brushed her hand away and continued flipping until he found AC/DC. "That's better. Now..." He rolled all the windows in the car down, sending Becky's fiery hair into a frenzy. She protested, but he couldn't hear her over the car radio. He grinned, knowing she was aggravated. While she was preoccupied trying to tie her hair back, he snuck a peak at the gps on his phone. He'd rather not get lost for real. This place he had in mind is as quirky as Becky is. He'd seen it on a movie once and according to Google, it wasn't very far from their hotel. Eventually Becky gained control of the radio. Well, the volume at least.
"I never took you for a classic rock fella." He shrugged. "Oh! I love this song!" She exclaimed turning the volume up on 'Every Breath You Take'.
"You know this song is about a stalker, right?" He yelled over the song and the open windows.
"I love it anyway!"
Kevin stole glances at her across the car as she belted out the song and he suddenly realized just how close he'd grown to her. There was something so real, so unapologetic about her. No bullshit. Becky was Becky.
"What?" She asked, catching him glancing at her.
"Nothin." He replied, hanging his left arm out of the window and into the cool night air. The Rolling Stones came on the radio and he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel."Are you still bored?" He asked rather loudly over the music. She grinned and shook her head no.
.
Becky spotted it before Kevin did, really.
"Are those..." He turned off the interstate and the headlights illuminated a pair of large green feet. "Dinosaurs?" She finished her question after he turned the radio off. Her eyes were wide as she looked all around them. Two giant concrete dinosaurs stood around the car and Kevin drove them up to the t-rex with the glowing eyes before parking the car. He was enjoying the look of disbelief on her face. "What is this, Kev?"
"I seen it in a movie once." He replied before opening the door and stepping out into the darkness. The dinosaurs did look imposing in the moonlight. Faded paint and cracked exteriors didn't stand out as much as he was sure they did in the daytime.
"Where are you going?" She asked as he walked around the dino's foot.
"C'mere Bex."
She followed close behind and met him at a doorway in the figure's foot. "Looks kinda spooky in there." He teased as he flipped on the flashlight app on his phone and tested the door. "Come on, it's unlocked."
"Are you sure it's okay for us to be going in there?" She asked stepping away from the doorway.
"It's 5am and the door's unlocked. And I don't see anyone to stop us." He climbed the first few stairs and reached back for her hand. "C'mon, I'll go first ya puddin."
They were both winded before they reached the top of the spiral staircase that opened up into a sort of room.
"Isn't this cool, Bex?" He asked, desperately hoping that she did.
"This is a dino-score!"
He rolled his eyes before grabbing her hand and walking her to towards the mesh grating behind the dinosaur's teeth. He pulled her down to sit in his lap on the floor. "What is this place?" She asked, the amusement clear in her voice.
"Let's see if I get service in a dinosaur's mouth." He laughed, pulling his phone out of his pocket. After a few minutes of reading he had an answer for her. "Long story short, an old man built Mr. Rex here that other dinosaur..." He pointed towards the other large dinosaur in their view. "Dinny. They were built to promote that place." He paused again to point out a building they could barely see from their vantage point. "Which I think was a diner. But it's closed now. And a bunch of Creationists have taken over and added a church and some more dinosaurs. It says here that there's a gift shop inside of Dinny."
"This is so cool Kev! How did you find out about this?"
"I looked it up once. I remembered earlier that it was here in Cali. Lucky that it wasn't far from us." She wrapped her arms around his middle, enjoying his body heat in the cold desert wind. "Was this a good adventure?"
"Definitely." She replied as he rested his chin on top of her head. Aside from the cars passing on the freeway they were the only two people in their world right now. "How did you know I'd like dinosaurs?"
"Doesn't everyone like dinosaurs?" He laughed. "If you want, we can come back tomorrow in the daytime. See the inside of Dinny. We lucked out and got free admission to this one."
"No, this is perfect." She replied. Becky felt like she could cry. He held her tight and she wished that they were the only two people in the world. Sasha had warned her about this very thing, about getting too close to Kevin. Here was this wonderful man holding her tight but he could never really be hers. Maybe she'd just met him at the wrong place, the wrong time. Maybe there could have been something more between them. But she knew what she was getting herself into, and stuff like this was worth it. In the little moments like this, he was hers. She felt guilty but it was true. Then she mentally kicked herself for getting all emotional while sitting in a t-rex's mouth of all places.
.
"What's the matter? Ready to go back?" He asked when he noticed her silence.
"No." She replied, moving his arm so that she could read his watch. "Not yet."
Kevin felt rather smug, bringing Becky somewhere like this. It was sheer luck that the attraction was unlocked, and soon he'd be watching the sunrise. Over the desert. In a t-rex's mouth. And he'll be sharing such a cool moment with his best friend.
"Hey Kev... I want to do something, but don't read to much into it okay?" Before he really had time to mull over that statement Becky turned his face to hers and laid the sweetest, most chaste kiss on his lips. "I don't want to cause any trouble. Just a kiss between friends." She stammered.
They both turned their attention to the streaks of orange in the dark sky and Becky reached for his hand. When he moved away her heart leapt into her throat. She knew instantly she had messed up everything.
"Hey Bex." He whispered and when she turned to face him he held her face and kissed her deeply as the sun rose over the desert. She pulled away first, her face flushed. "Between friends." He repeated. Unsure of what to do next, Kevin looked down at his watch. "We should get going. Someone might be coming."
.
They climbed down the staircase in silence, racing back to the car as quickly as possible. Kevin left the windows down as he pulled back onto the interstate. The cool morning air felt good after the heat they'd shared. Fleetwood Mac played on the radio as he fumbled around in the console for his sunglasses. Becky watched him as he drove, one hand loosely on the wheel and the other hanging out the window. Usually she knew what was going on in that head of his, but the sunglasses made it hard to read him. She knew better than to hope that anything else would come of what just happened. Kevin's moral code was too strong for that, and she would never dare to break up a family. He's someone's husband and Daddy to two little ones. But for one desert sunrise, in the mouth of a T-Rex, there was something more between them. One little secret between them.
Kevin stole a glance at her before trading hands on the wheel and reaching for her's. He laced his fingers between hers, a gesture that he hoped let her know that everything was okay between them. He wished he could think of some lame dinosaur joke or something, just to break the tension. 'You're dino-mite!' No. 'You make my heart saur!' Definitely not.
"Hey Bex!" He said loudly over the radio. "What do you call a sleeping dinosaur?" She shook her head, her brain too preoccupied to think of anything.
"A dino-snore!" He deadpanned before stealing a glance at her face. She didn't laugh but he caught the grin on her face and immediately felt better about things.
.
Back at the hotel they found a parking spot and walked inside together, for once not really caring who saw them. If questioned about it they could always lie and say they went out for breakfast. No one would believe the whole story about dinosaurs anyway. In the elevator she hugged him close before they parted ways, heading to their separate hotel rooms.
Later that day he snuck back to the Dinosaurs and visited Dinny the gift shop by himself. The next chance he got Becky alone, he gave her a necklace that he'd bought there. A small green plastic t-rex on a silver chain. And she grinned from ear to ear as she put it on.
