"Eames!"

She could hear him yelling but she couldn't move. Couldn't talk. Looking down she saw red seeping through her clothes.

Oh crap.

She felt herself falling but she never hit the ground. Someone caught her and was holding her.

Bobby.

"Bobby…" She had never found it so hard to talk before.

"Shh Alex, don't talk." His voice was surprisingly calm but she knew he was scared. She wasn't supposed to get shot. She was the older one. She was the quicker draw, the better shooter. This wasn't supposed to happen. Not to her.

"You're going to be ok," He whispered as the paramedics rushed over. "You're going to be ok…"

The last thing she remembered before everything went black was Bobby's voice.

--

He rode to the hospital with her. At first the paramedic in the back put up a fight. "Family only sir." But then the driver snapped that they were partners and to let him in.

Her heart crashed on the way to the hospital. He never knew two minutes could last that long.

When they rushed her to surgery he was forced to stay behind. Within a matter of moments the Captain was at his side.

"Goren," He didn't respond, simply stared at the doors they had pushed her through.

"I can't…" The Captain understood. In the years they had been partners they had never been parted for longer than a night's sleep. They were a part of one another, and for him to sit without her was torture.

"Come on Goren," The Captain said softly, guiding his detective to a seat in the waiting room.

--

A white light greeted her when she opened her eyes. She looked up to see a man she vaguely recognized.

"I know you…" She said softly as she looked around. The room was completely white.

"I was the first case you worked with your partner." The man said.

She continued to stare at the man. "I'm dead, aren't I?" She asked in a whisper.

"Looks that way."

She shook her head. "No."

"It's not up to us."

"I can't leave him!" She screamed. "He needs me!" The man nodded his head.

"That's all you had to say." The next thing she knew the room was gone.

--

Several hours later the doctor made his way out of the surgery room towards Goren.

"You her partner?" He nodded and stood up.

"Is she…"

"We got the bullet and stopped the bleeding. But she did crash on us twice during the surgery. She's stable for the moment but we'll need to keep an eye on her."

He nodded and bit his lip. "Can I…see her?"

The doctor nodded his head. "That would be a good idea."

She looked so tiny in the hospital bed with wires connected to her.

He lowered himself into the chair next to the bed, wrapped his hand around hers and began to wait.

--

Her vision was blurry when she opened her eyes. Looking around she was relieved to see she was in a hospital room. Feeling an unusual weight on her hand she glanced to her left and smiled when she saw Bobby holding her hand.

She stretched out her right arm and touched his hair. His head snapped up and a look of relief washed over his face.

"Eames,"

"Hey," Her voice was hoarse but he smiled at her anyway. "You been there all night?"

"Yeah,"

"You should go home. Get some sleep."

He shook his head, his grip on her hand tightening. "No…I'm not leaving till you're better."

"But the Captain,"

"He'll understand." He said, interrupting her.

Her eyelids began to droop but she fought it. She had missed him and her dream had scared her. She just wanted to lay there and see him keeping watch.

Her body had other ideas. Soon she couldn't keep her eyelids open any longer.

"Eames?"

"Yeah," She whispered tiredly.

"I'm glad you're alive."

"Me too."
