Kanzaki broke up with him when they graduated from high school. She said Yoshito was not the type of mate she really wanted, nor she his, and they would be better off trying to go out with somebody else.
Yoshito had argued that if they could be the perfect partners all these years, they could continue to be good together. But deep down he knew what she said to be true, that he was only begging Kanzaki to stay because he was used to her. Yoshito did not like changes; he liked being in familiar parameters so that he could predict the potential outcomes in given situations properly.
And he supposed that was what did not work. Kanzaki had always been one like the wildfire, impossible to contain and utterly brilliant. She was too unaccountable for Yoshito, surging out in random to blaze beautifully. It made him uncomfortable, even if Kanzaki usually did come up with the superior ideas.
In turn, Yoshito was too calculable for Kanzaki. She would prefer someone like Onizuka, all instincts and extremities. Onizuka could entertain her; Yoshito suspected Kanzaki thought himself dull to be with. There was only so much to talk about if you understood each other too well.
Yes, when Yoshito calmed enough from the bereavement, he could see why they would be better apart. Since they had so much together-time not knowing what to do, they might as well spend it with somebody else. Once again, Kanzaki pointed out the better solution. She was ever the ultimate genius, seeing straight to the truth.
Still, Yoshito would miss the good old days.
