So Happy I Could Die

Lok was full of ideas, and, as sometimes happens, not all of them were good ones.

"Let's have a baby."

His wife, Sophie Casterwill-Lambert, narrowed her eyes at him, scrutinizing. She had a hint as to exactly why he wanted to try having a child now - most of it having to do with the "trying" part - but she was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"You've been playing with Zane again," she said, referring to Dante and Zhalia's son (nobody really knew how that had happened, either). He was six now, still very awkward and cute and just coming into those more manageable primary school years; Lok was obviously focusing on this and overlooking how he had driven his parents half-insane in the first few years of his life.

"Well...yeah, but I really do think that we're ready." He shrugged, palms up in a gesture she had learned to both love and fear in the many years they'd risked their lives together, and reached to put an arm around her waist, pulling her against his side. "It'll be a new kind of adventure."

She stepped out of his embrace, irritation rising sharply at his words. "If you're comparing having a child to solving a puzzle, then we're obviously not ready!"

Surprised, his eyes widened, and he held his hands up in the usual peace stance he took when they argued. "Whoa, I was just suggesting it. What got you so angry?"

Sophie closed her eyes, debating with herself for a moment, and then told him.

A moment later, there was a weak little groan, and then a thud as Lok stumbled and fell back against the coffee table in disbelief, looking for a chair. He wasn't unconscious, but looked like he desperately wanted to be.

Sophie sighed.

Yes, they definitely weren't ready - Mother Nature just didn't seem to care.

A/n: A) You know Sophie would totally hyphenate, and B) Zhalia has a kid because Sepphira Mitoki and I are humongous jerks like that, and the thought of her trying to be nurturing amuses me. (I happen to think Dante would actually make a good father.)

(Disclaimer: I don't own Huntik.)
