(Hey. This is a songfic/fanfic, using the words to Hoobastank's The Reason)

Prince Jonathan sat at his desk, tapping his fingers impatiently on the ornately carved wood as he struggled to siphon his feelings onto the parchment in front of him. No stoke of genius came; no idea on how to properly express himself. Crumpled pieces of paper scattered around his suite lay in silent testimony of his failed attempts.

A polite knock on the door made Jon scowl. The right words had been on the tips of his fingers…

"Still at it, Jon?" Gary stuck his head into the room. The Prince acknowledged him glumly.

"Yeah, I just can't seem to get it right. I just need--"

"Gary?" A fluttering, girly voice came from outside Jon's door. Both knights cringed. "Is he still pent up in there?"

Gary's face disappeared from Jon's line of vision, back into the corridor. "Yes, my dear Josiane, he's still working. I don't think he should be disturbed."

From the sound of her voice, Jon knew the blonde lady was pouting. "But, I know he wants to see me--"

"He really shouldn't be disturbed," Gary said, more firmly. Jon heard their footsteps recede.

Thank you, Cousin Gary, he thought to himself. Suddenly an idea struck. All he needed was the threat of Josiane back in his life to get the words rolling.

My dearest Alanna,

I'm not a perfect person. There's many things I wish I didn't do. But I continue learning; I never meant to do those things to you. And so I have to say before I go, that I just want you to know I've found a reason for me to change who I used to be; a reason to start over new…and the reason is you.

I'm sorry that I hurt you. It's something I must live with everyday. And all the pain I put you through…I wish that I could take it all away and be the one who catches all your tears. That's why I need you to hear that I've found a reason to show a side of me you didn't know, a reason for all that I do…and the reason is you.

Love,

Jon

He looked it over quickly before rolling it and heating the sealing wax. For a moment he almost used his personal seal, but reconsidered when he remembered the cause of their parting. Hastily he switched to the Great Seal of Tortall, and stamped it.

Still remembering Josiane's presence at court, Jon pleaded fatigue and had dinner delivered to his rooms. Naturally, Gary and Raoul ate with him, for which he was thankful.

"So Jon, I see you finished your letter," Raoul said, indicating the rolled parchment on Jon's desk. "You going to tell us what it was about?"

Jon smiled wanly. "Hopefully, we'll find out soon."
