Mello-

Without you, without you everything falls apart

Near-

He sat in the investigation room. Doing a jigsaw puzzle, like normal.

Nothing seemed out of place. Nothing seemed wrong.

But Near's indifferent seeming acts, doing his jigsaw... playing chess with pieces marked 'L' 'Matt' 'Mello' 'Near' and 'Kira'... they were his coping methods.

When he found out about L. His Idol. The person he most looked up to. The person he was almost destined to be. When he first found out about him... and how he had died by Kira's hand.

He had taken all the pieces out of all of his jigsaws and started them all again. Just to have Mello walk into his room and smash them all up out of anger. And when Mello was done, he'd leave Near to pick up all the pieces... in silence.

When he had heard about Matt, from a reliable source... He had taken a Knight from his side of the chess board. The first Knight that he had marked with 'Matt'. He started to do all of his jigsaws again. And then when he had finished them all, Mello had came... and knocked them all down again. Knocked all the pieces to the floor, where Near would wait until Mello was gone, and then he would pick them up again. To start his jigsaws all over.

When he heard about Mello... he took the other knight off the board. The other Knight marked 'Mello'. He took apart his puzzles, and started them again. And more. Others... Bigger and more complex, with smaller pieces... pieces that were easier to lose. And when he finished them, he waited. He waited and waited for the blonde bombshell to walk through his door, and smash up his jigsaws again... To leave him with nothing but jigsaw pieces to pick up and put back together.

But he never came. So Near tried to re-create the anger that Mello showed every time that he destroyed his jigsaws... but he couldn't... because emotion, such as anger or sadness, had never been his speciality.

He sat in the investigation room. Doing a jigsaw puzzle, like normal.

Nothing seemed out of place. Nothing seemed wrong.

But on closer inspection, jigsaw pieces were all over the floor, untouched from where they had fallen. And as Near put his jigsaw together, his shoulders shook ever so slightly.

He sniffed and shook his head.

"It's not as much fun to pick up the pieces if Mello wasn't the one who knocked them down in the first place," he said softly, speaking to himself and his little finger puppets that sat near his jigsaw puzzle.
