Silence Brings the Rain

Tragedy strikes when we least expect it. One minute we could be perfectly happy, the next we could be drowning in sorrow. That's what happened to Nick Stokes one bright and sunny morning in May. He woke up, ate breakfast, and decided that he would go see his girlfriend Sara Sidle. They both had the day off, and he thought that they could take a walk in the park, or go see a movie. So he grabbed his keys, hopped in his car, and sped off towards her house.

As he approached an intersection, he noticed a lot of people were gathering in the street. He got out of his car and went to see what everyone was looking at. It was a car wreck. A bad one. A delivery truck of some kind and ran a stop light and collided with a red Impala. As he stood there, he couldn't help but think that he had seen this car before. Sure, he had seen a lot of red Impalas before, but this one just seemed so familiar. It took him a second to realize why, and when he did, his heart broke. It was Sara's car.

He pushed through the crowd of people and showed his ID to two police officers who were blocking his way. He raced over to the car and peered through the shattered window. There he saw the love of his life sprawled across the front seat. Blood trickled down her head and out her nose and mouth. She didn't look like she was breathing. Nick pried open the door and, after checking to see if she was still alive, which she was, he gently picked her up and out of the car. He slowly lowered her to the asphalt and cradled her head in his arms. She slowly opened her eyes, looked up at Nick, and gave him a small sad smile. He offered her a small smile of his own and asked her softly, "Where were you going?"

"I was coming to see you," she whispered so quietly that he had to strain his ears to hear. But he heard her nonetheless, and tears filled his eyes and ran down his face. Nick knew she wasn't going to make it, so he brushed Sara's hair away from her face and kissed her gently on the forehead. "I love you," he whispered where only she could hear.

"I love you too," she struggled to whisper back. Then, with her last breath she said, "I'll wait for you." And then she was silent. The bright and sunny day turned cloudy, and rain began to pour heavily like Nick's tears from the sky.

One month later, Nick stood at Sara's grave. "I miss you baby," he said softly, and knelt down on his knees and kissed her headstone lightly. "You said you would wait for me." Nick reached into his back pocket and pulled out a pistol. "Well, now you don't have to wait anymore." The cemetery was eerily quiet. A loud gunshot rang out through the trees, then all was silent once more.

And rain began to fall.
