Un-Fading Memories
I watched as the bead curtain opened a little and suppressed a smile. He was finally here and I wondered once again how I'd gotten in this chair with a cigarette in-between my fingers and an oven filled with cookies, but I already knew and it hurt.
I hate the way places are ruined by a sudden outburst of popularity. Thousands of tourists flood in and saturate the place. I guess it's selfish because I'm sure they hate having to share the places they love away from home as well. But there's something wrong about a holiday filled with the people you've spent so much money getting away from. All I used to want was someway of getting there without being followed by everyone else and using my knowledge of computing and science I got it.
Not unassisted of course because how could I tackle such a complex idea by myself? There was Mat, he was in it for the money. Sarah, she wanted to become famous without singing or acting and there was me, looking for that perfect place. It took more planning then I could imagine and every time we tried to intercept the brains nerve system I thought we were going to paralyze each other but Mat knew what he was doing.
Then one day we cracked it. Making the brainwave travel in a circuit through a device which edited the information in a way that could change what you sensed. I could smell bread baking without making a loaf and taste chocolate without buying a bar but best of all I could sun bathe without hunting around for hours to find a spot. We sold the idea and made a fortune and it was going great until they invented AI. I remember the pain so perfectly. They would do this operation and I thought they were trying to take out my brain, so young, so naive. But it was worse, they put us in here and using the device that edited the brainwave as a base they created it. If it wasn't for that search for the perfect solitary hideout I probably wouldn't be here, sure it's keeping me alive but it's stopping so many others from having a life. When they put us in they gave us false memories, I know because Mat and Sarah thought they were related and from somewhere in Europe but all the time I used the different device must have done some damage, so much for being safe.
And now I see the final part of this epic in a human form. I start to talk, all the time stopping myself from saying "good luck" because I know luck doesn't have anything to do with it, not a bit.
