It happened today. The single, most important thing that she had worried about for all
their years of friendship had finally happened. Gabrielle had died.
Xena silently played the memory over and over in her minds eye. She examined every angle,
torturing herself, knowing there was something more she could have done to save her life.
She was the "invincible" warrior princess and all she could do was watch her best friend
fall into the lava.
Everything played in slow motion as Gabrielle grabbed her daughter and just fell backwards.
Her piercing eyes staring helplessly at Xena. She recalled how Gabrielle just fell and in an instant she was gone.
Xena shook her head from the memory. She didn't know how to react to this. She felt like a
part of her had been ripped out and now she was emotionally numb as if she was an outer
shell. She should have listened to Gabrielle and not taken the mission personally. But
Xena couldn't have done that, the monster had killed her child and she felt like it was
more revenge than anything else. And now Gabrielle was dead.
"Oh, Gabrielle I am so sorry!" Xena cried. "I didn't mean for this to happen. If only you
had let me kill her, like I would have, you would still be around."
Xena silently sat and sobbed. Somewhere in the background Joxer wined but Xena just
ignored him. She didn't feel like being comforted or the comforter. She wanted to feel
the pain, the guilt, and the anguish. That was what she deserved in any case.
Her memories took her back to the first time they met. She wished she could turn back
the hands of time and changed the way things had worked out. But she knew she couldn't.
She would just have to live with what had happened. The big question is what will happen
to her now?
" I will never forget you," Xena silently whispered between her tears. " Until we meet
again. My dear friend . . . until that day."
