My friend, my lover, my mentor

Shalimar ran through the empty street, looking over her shoulder at her pursuers. They were gaining ground. She took a sudden left turn into an alley and hid in the shadows behind a dumpster. They passed without seeing her and she let out a deep breath of relief. She looked at her left shoulder wincing in pain. A bullet shined from the round hole. She was covered in blood and her usually golden locks were tinted in a light brownish color.

She closed her eyes and bit back her tears. In a matter of minutes she had lost everything…

Adam…The man who was more than a father to her…a mentor…a savior…He who had rescued her from her feral side and taught her to accept it. He had found her in an alley much like this one, sacred, confused...the first person who didn't back away from her attack, instead showing her kindness. She couldn't stop the tears anymore. They had been through so much together... good times and bad. "I'd never hurt you…" He had said, but she hurt him. She had failed him.

She froze and listened to the sounds around her. They were coming back. This time they'd find her. She had to escape. She started running, her pursuers giving chase. She entered an old warehouse, climbing up to the roof. She crouched low, behind a structure. If she was lucky they wouldn't realize she was in the building. Her shoulder was throbbing and she was tired but that was nothing compared to how her heart felt. She closed her eyes, letting the wind caress her skin. She looked up at the starry sky. A star twinkled, reminding her of Jesse's smile.

Jesse…her brother and best friend at the same time. He was so scared and amazed the first time she had met him in Sanctuary. She had felt the need to protect him from the first moment. But he didn't need protection. He was stronger than he thought. And now he was gone. She had failed him too.

They found her. She had to keep running. She jumped down to the deserted street again, wincing and rubbing her shoulder. Bullets flew past her, barely missing their target. She ran to the harbor area. It was deserted in the middle of the night. She needed to rest. She hid again behind some crates. She watched a couple on the deck of a yacht swaying to a tune. They looked so happy. Hot tears stung her eyes again and her throat constricted.

Brennan…her soul mate…the man she loved. They had admitted their feelings not long before disaster struck. Three years of hopes and dreams became fulfilled in a second and destroyed in the next. He had been there for her when Ashlocke was trying to take over her mind. But she…she had failed him. She failed them all. Failed to protect her pack-her family.

They found her again. She had to run. She leapt out of her hiding place and took off. She had keep running. She had to escape. She had to run. For what? Everyone she ever cared about was dead. She stopped and turned around, facing her pursuers. She was tired of running. Now she would face her demons. Fate would decide.
