Sara could feel him watching her as she got her coffee. There was a barely-concealed smirk on his face, and his eyes practically shone with amusement as he leaned against the counter. She tried to ignore him, but finally she just sighed and set her coffee down.

"You got something you want to say, Stokes?" she asked as she turned to face him.

"Peterson has a crush on you," he said, his smirk broadening into a full-blown smile.

"And that's what's got you grinning like an idiot? What are you, ten?"

"He flirts with you. He gets so nervous whenever you walk into a room that he actually drops stuff. It might just be one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen."

"Stop picking on him," Sara snapped. "You're being mean. Just because you have no problem getting women doesn't mean you get to make fun of other guys."

Nick's smile started to falter. "I was just –"

"And how do you know I don't like him back? Maybe I'm going to ask him out."

"Please don't," he said quietly.

"Why not?" she asked, turning and walking over to the table. "Because then a nerd would actually get a date?"

"Because then I would have missed my chance to ask you out."

Sara looked up at him sharply, convinced that he would be smiling broadly at her. But his expression was serious and his eyes were sad as he kept them locked on his coffee cup. Sara moved away from the table and back over to him, her own cup forgotten.

"You've had a long time to ask me out," she said slowly. "Why would you wait so long?"

Nick shrugged. "Never though you'd say yes."

She was standing right in front of him, barely an inch between them.

"Do you mean that?"

"Yes," he whispered.

She nodded before gently taking his cup out of his hands and setting it down on the counter behind him.

"The reason I snapped at you before…someone told me earlier today that I should forget about you, because guys like you don't out with geeky girls like me."

Nick raised his eyes to her, frowning. "Who?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

"Sophia."

"I'm sorry," he whispered. Reaching out, he gently tucked a hair behind her ear. "Are you really going to ask Peterson out?"

Sara laughed. "No."

"I happen to like geeky girls, you know."

"Oh do you, huh?"

"I know it might be hard to see beneath my devilishly good looks, but it turns out that I'm a geeky guy myself."

"You know, I think I may have heard that somewhere."

Sara moved closer – so close that he could feel her breath on his lips.

"So are you gonna ask me out or what, Stokes?"

"I'm working on it –"

His words flew out of his head as soon as her lips touched his.
