Sarah walked into the ballroom, her dress stiff yet comfortable. Her heart pounded in her chest for no reason. Or a reason she didn't yet know. Soft music was emanating from somewhere she couldn't see. It was familiar to her, but Sarah couldn't place it. She glided to the middle of the dance floor, which was empty, save for one man.
He wasn't facing her. She saw his blonde hair, sticking out in every which way. Now that she really looked, she could see slight blue streaks through it as well. His fancy coat reminded her of royalty for some reason.
Suddenly, he turned to face her.
He was beautiful, though he looked angry.
"You're late, Sarah," he said.
"I'm sorry," she replied, and his frustration softened a bit.
"It's quite alright. I've just missed you, is all."
"Oh," Sarah replied, confused. "How can you miss me, if we……"
She remembered. "Jareth," she whispered.
His face lit up at the sound of his name. "You remember."
She smiled and held out her hands. "Can we dance?"
"I thought you'd never ask," Jareth replied smirking.
They whirled around the floor, as Jareth sang to her softly. She stared up into his mismatched eyes, feeling her heart melt slowly. The warmth that exuded from his body was fascinating.
"I love you," Sarah said aloud, as it dawned on her.
He smirked again. "I know."
"And you love me?" Sarah said, partly a question.
He inclined his head.
"So where does this leave us?" she asked.
"Are you ready to take my offer?"
"I…I…I'm not sure Jareth," she replied, enjoying the taste of his name on her tongue.
"Let's see if I can change that."
His face came closer to hers, and she couldn't stop staring at his lips. She closed her eyes, and felt those lips touch hers. Timid at first, but then more urgent. Like he would never see her again.
She rolled over in her bed. Tears were streaming down her face. "A dream. Why?" Her heart ached in every way possible. If felt as if it was being ripped from her chest.
"Sarah?"
She turned her head to the voice.
"What is it Toby?"
"Are you okay?" Toby asked. He'd never seen his sister this way before.
"I'll be fine, don't worry. I just remembered a friend that I'll never see again."
"Do I know them?"
"Actually, yes. You met him when you were only a baby. A long time ago."
Toby stared at Sarah for a minute. Then he left. She looked like she needed to be alone.
"Goblin King, Goblin King, wherever you may be…," Sarah mumbled. "I don't know how to rhyme it. Just come and take me away!"
She closed her eyes and opened them.
Back in the ballroom, new tears streamed down her face.
"You brought me back!" she said smiling.
"I said I loved you, didn't I?" Jareth replied.
"Yes," she sighed, as he came into view.
They came together and twirled on the dance floor again.
"Can I stay forever?"
"If you wish it," Jareth replied, barely able to contain his own happiness.
"I do."
Still spinning, he began to sing to her again.
There's such a sad love There's such a fooled heart As the pain sweeps through
Deep in your eyes, a kind of pale jewel
Open and closed within your eyes
I'll place the sky within your eyes
Beating so fast in search of new dreams
A love that will last within your heart
I'll place the moon within your heart
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill has gone
Wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you
As the world falls down
