I woke up and looked over to see Jaryn stretching in the morning sunlight. Delicate like a swan. All pale and angular beauty, precious as a diamond. She was my world.
Her head snapped in my direction. She could feel my eyes on her. Her eyes almost looked angry. Then they softened, and she shrugged, walking away. Interest lost.
I followed her to the kitchen. She pulled down a box of cereal, pulling out a single piece she popped it in her mouth, before looking over at me and pushing the box in my direction.
She assumed I was hungry. We were in the kitchen, after all. She turned, opening the fridge and looking for the milk. I tore my eyes away from her long enough to search the covert for bowls.
Breakfast Cereal.
"Would you like some toast?" I asked kindly, my voice soft and caring.
My eyes were greeted with a raised eyebrow. My kindness was few and far between. I should have realized that would be met with suspicion.
"I'm making some, I thought you would want some." I toned down the friendliness in my tone, and added a light snap at the end.
She relaxed. "Sure."
I finished the toast, and had to resist the urge to butter it, and pull the crust off the way Jaryn like it. Instead I put the toast on the table, dropping it slightly harder than I had too. This was what she expected of me.
I sat down, catching glances at her through my eyelashes, while I pretended to study my toast.
Just as I expected, she buttered her toast carefully before pulling away the edges. She didn't like crust. It was too dry.
I could feel her discomfort. She knew something was wrong. She just couldn't put her finger on it. We were were twins after all. It would be impossible to hide anything from her.
Eventually, she sighed, frustrated.
"What, Kerith?" She demanded.
I swallowed, how do you tell you're sister that you've fallen in love with her?
But I didn't have to, something in my eyes gave me away. I could tell by the way her expression suddenly changed.
"Oh Kerith." Her eyes were sad.
Sad. Not happy. Not relieved. Sad.
She didn't feel the same.
I gave a broken smile. She reached across the table for me, and I pulled back, easing smoothly to my feet, picking up the dishes.
"You don't have to..."
I walked around the table and she was infront of me. She ripped the dishes out of my hands, smashing them to the floor.
"Look at me!" She demanded.
I looked down and her eyes were shining.
"I love you! I'll always love you! No matter what! I'll always be here by you're side!" She declared.
"You don't hate me?" I whispered to her.
"No." Jaryn shook her head. She reached up and brushed a tear off my cheek. "Well get through this, just like we get through everything, together."
I pulled her into my arms. Sobbing on her neck. I felt her pull me close and rub my back.
"Hang in there brother, I'm here. I'm always here."
