Hiya! This is another little one shot I've had on my mind for a while, that I honestly couldn't wait to write. Its an EdWin fic, so.. yeah. Disclaimer: I do not own Fullmetal Alchemist or the song I'll wait for you.
I'll Wait For You
The snow in Montana was three feet high
The lady at the counter said, "There ain't no flights"
And so he called her on the telephone
He said, "I'll rent a car and I'll drive home"
Edward looked up at the flight billboard at the airport. Not a single flight was still up and running due to the snow. This was the worst snowstorm he had ever seen in Montana. Going to the counter, he asked the flight attendant to check if there were really not any flights. When she confirmed that there weren't, he sighed and leaned up against the wall.
Though he hated to admit it, Edward was getting old. His skin was now old and worn, even his automail arm seemed to be losing its shine. Winry, his wife now, was sick and in the hospital. Ed brought out his cell phone and dialed her room number. When she picked up, he told her that he would be renting a car and driving home right away. He could practically hear the old laughter in her voice when she replied.
And she said, "I'll wait for you.
Like I did last year.
At Christmas time, with your family here
And your truck broke down in San Antone
And the gifts stayed wrapped until you got home
Oh, this ain't nothing new..
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you."
Now he's on his cell phone in a Coupe Deville
Talkin' to the one he loves and always will
His heart is breakin cause she's there alone
Her heart is achin cause she wants him home..
Edward cursed as he swerved dangerously on the icy road. Winry's cracked voice sounded through the cell phone he held by his ear, worriedly asking if he was alright. He calmed her by talking to her again, making sure that she didn't strain herself. He wanted to be with her so badly, wanted to hold her, make her feel safe. He knew that Winry wanted him there as much as he did. But when he saw that huge mound of snow blocking the road, he sighed and told her that he might be very late. He smiled sadly when he heard her cracked reply.
She says, "I'll wait for you,
Like in '68
When our child was due, but I said, he'll have to wait
Until his dad gets here, and stands by my side.
Remember, dear, our sons first cry
Oh, this ain't nothing new..
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you."
He didn't stop all day to eat a bite,
And he finally got there around Midnight.
The doctor said, "She's in a better place..
She said to give you this note, just in case.."
Edward furiously drove into the hospital parking lot and parked the car hurriedly. He then dashed into the hallway that occupied Winry's room. Despite his aching bones, he urged them to go faster. But he stopped short when he saw the doctor standing sadly outside her door, a note clutched firmly in his hand. The doctor gave Ed the news. Ed felt his heart shatter. Not Winry.. No.. He was interrupted as the doctor handed him a note. He said it was from her, and Ed took it. He let the tears he held back fall as he read the note. He smiled sadly when he was finished. Then he closed his eyes, nodded, and turned to leave.
And it said: I'll wait for you
At Heaven's Gate
Oh, I don't care
How long it takes
And I'll tell Saint Pete that I can't come in
Without my love, and my best friend
Oh, this ain't nothing new
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you..
P.S. I love you too.
Sweetheart, I'll wait for you..
