Prompt: Apple

"Remus, Remus he's gone mad!" squeaked a short, chubby boy as he burst through the library doors, earning himself a rather dirty look from the librarian, which he ignored completely. He scurried past the shelves of books until he came to where a sandy haired boy sat, thoroughly engaged in a book.

"You need to see this Remus, I don't know what's wrong with him!" the boy panted, wiping sweat from his brow. Remus sighed and closed his book, trying to hide his irritation as he looked expectantly at his friend. Honestly, he'd never find out anything about his condition if people were constantly interrupting him like this.

"You don't know what's wrong with who?" Remus asked the boy who was already sputtering away about fruit, the lake, juice running down someone's face. "Who is it? Peter! Peter, tell me!" He begged as he got to feet feet and followed Peter, who had already started retreating out of the library.

"It's James, he went for a walk by the lake, don't know why – he's never been one for going on walks." Remus could imagine why James would want to walk by the lake, he and Sirius had been betting on who would be the first to befriend the giant squid since they'd first seen it upon their arrival to Hogwarts some year and a half ago. "Anyway, when he got back he started rambling, something about a fruit, maybe a pear or a grape? He hasn't stopped talking about it for the past half hour."

'I should go back to the library right now and finish studying' Remus thought to himself. It wasn't like James never talked nonsense, in fact most of the things he said didn't make sense. Anyone besides Peter wouldn't find it disconcerting. 'Anyone besides Peter isn't stupid enough to find it worrying.'

Remus couldn't help but feel bad for thinking that of Peter, he was his friend after all. He didn't have much time to feel guilty though because he and Peter soon reached their dorm, where the first thing he saw was Sirius chuckling as he watched James in amusement. "What's this I hear about a pear?"

"Not a pear, Remmy, an apple." James explained, shaking his head in fake disappointment. "Aren't they wonderful?"

"Uh, sure they are James." Remus replied, glancing at Sirius who seemed to be as confused as he was – though apparently much more entertained. Neither Sirius or Peter seemed to be planning on asking James about his sudden fascination with apples. Of course they wouldn't, it'd never even occur to them."Would you care to explain why they've suddenly become so wonderful?"

James gaped at Remus in mock astonishment before producing an apple from his pocket, which he held up high as he spoke. "Look at it Remus. Shh, don't speak, just look." He said as Remus opened his mouth to protest. "It shines such a shiny shine that could only be the shine of an apple!"

He flashed a quick grin at his friends - one in hysterics, one laughing at his best friend's choice of words, and the third grinning despite his attempts not to - before continuing on with his speech. "The apple, shaped like a beautiful deformed ball that crunches when bitten, is a glorious fruit, it's juice trickling down your face as you sit in the sun, laughing while the sun shines down on your long hair. Long hair that cries out for hands to run through it!"

"James, your new found love of apples wouldn't have anything to do with Lily, would it?"
