Author's Note: This is something that has been in my head far too long now. Time to release my thoughts. This AU and I hope that won't keep you from reading. I understand the hesitancy towards "those" kinds of stories, but: "You can't judge a book by its cover." Therefore, I'd hope you'd at least give this a chance. Enjoy.

[prologue]

"Stefan, please. St-stop." Laughter bubbled inside of her tiny body.

He beckoned for her to release it, his hands finding her weak spot. She'd been always tickilish, and it never ended pretty.

"Stefan! Stop or I swear—" her face was now scrunched up with anger and frustration.

"Make me." He cut her off, grinning, yet again taking advantage of her weakness.

"Fine, I will and—" she erupted with giggles and smiles before her sentence was complete.

He'd won.

He let go of her waist, letting her catch her breath. "I always win, Elle."

She stuck her tongue out at him; her way of admitting to defeat. Her surrender ended with her sitting on the light brown sand, picking up hand full's of it and watching it seep through her fingers.

He stared with a grateful smile. Elena Gilbert. Ten years of age. His best-friend since day one.

Sitting down beside her, his grin was now sloppy and childlike.

Elena's brown orbs drifted out to the lake, drowning in the depth of it. "Stefan?" The waves tickled her bare feet as they came in.

"Yeah?" he looked over at her.

"Do you ever wish you could fly?"

Stefan watched her hands play with the sand.

If I could hold your hand, Elena Gilbert, I could fly, he thought.

Author's Note: This is a tease, yes. Just to capture your interest and convince you to review, begging for more. But most of the chapters will be a decent length. I will explain with detail the characters and how everything is set up in this story in the next chapter. Please review with ideas for upcoming chapters, they are appreciated. Reviews in general are welcome, so please, write one. Thanks!

Always,
