He was suits and crazy socks, not green uniforms and combat boots. He was a hero, her hero, not that of a hundred kids, he'd done his time. He wasn't in need of more blood on his hands.
She was the passion of a mystery the hope of a family, not a grunt worker. She was his partner not that of some loud mouth kid with a little too much passion.
Together they were unstoppable, forever fighting in each others battles. So, who took the hits when they were hundreds of miles apart?
He looks down at their intertwined hands, hers small, dainty and smooth against his larger rough ones. The feeling just holding her hand arises makes him never want to let go. He's already AWOL what's a few more hours?
"Booth." She speaks quietly and he's praying she says she'll stay, he'd be back at the FBI in moments forget Afghanistan if he's got her. Their eyes lock, "That's my boarding call, I have to go." She slips her hand from his, and god he wants to kiss her so bad, but, there's a line he can't even try to cross. They step away, backs to each other, 10 paces and he stops first.
Something makes her turn around, she felt like there were words unsaid, but, also that there were not words she could say. They lock eyes again and she steels herself, how can he show so much emotion in a single look. She wishes she could decipher them. She hears her boarding call again and can hear Daisy impatiently tapping her foot. She's being pulled toward him by a force much stronger than her logic, yet Daisy clears her throat and she snaps back, turns around, and walks to the gate. Maybe a year away will help them fix them; get them back to someplace comfortable. She settles into her seat on the plane and realizes what they have is comfortable; she wants to come back to what she's leaving.
He walks with less purpose then usual, he was going back to war and at the same time fighting his own internal war. Her look, turning away said it all, she had moved on the very first time they kissed, he had to let go.
Then he heard it "Booth!" He whipped around, please don't be imaginary. But there she was, suddenly all around him, he easily scooped her up. "Don't be a hero Booth." She says to him as he sets her down. "Keep telling yourself that."
"I will Bones." She sighs she knows she has to get back on that plane and he has to get back on that base.
She backs away slightly not quite ready to let go, "Coffee Stand…" He cuts her off, "Reflecting pool." She nods, "One year," She says backing away but still holding his hand, "and Booth?" He looks up, "Don't let this change." With that she's gone, running back to her gate and he's got a reason to hold his head up.
"Don't be a hero this year," he whispers to himself, "unless it's hers."
