All his life he had never wanted for much of anything. Days were spent listlessly wishing for night, a time when he could stay up late and play video games, smoke, drink and do the things that daylight rejected. His existence was repetitive, and perhaps a little boring. But it was comforting in its structure. Nothing ever changed and he expected to die as such.
Matt smiled, how wrong had he been?
A short tempered blond with a lust for chocolate entered his life and changed everything. He was loud, abrasive, passionate and smarter than anyone had a right to be. He was everything that Matt was not. He hated Mello from the start.
But the blond wouldn't take no for an answer and inserted himself into Matt's life without a care if he was wanted or not. It was the single most thing Matt was grateful for. For without Mello he would never have had the strength to believe in himself and what he was capable of. He would never have had the hope to dream.
Without Mello...he would never have known love.
And he loved Mello with more than his heart could encompass. He was truly a gift for which Matt could not repay.
"Matt, hurry up before we miss our flight." Mello called from the living room of their rundown apartment.
"Just a sec!" Matt yelled back. He closed his eyes for a moment, imagining the look of irritation Mello would be wearing, and smiled. "Happy valentines, Mel."
And maybe one day, he would tell Mello just how much he meant.
"Matt!"
But for now there was a flight to catch.
