Everything about their lives are legendary. They are walking, teenage pariahs; they are hailed from the tip of the poles, to the most desolate of islands. The story of the kids who saved the world from ages thirteen to seventeen would reign on in the history books until the final sun set for mankind.
But, what was more legendary, more magnificent of a tale was how two of these renowned heroes wound up together. They went from hatred, to friendship, to love. That was legendary.
To Zuko, Katara wasn't just the girl who saved the world, or the person who taught the avatar waterbending. She was just Katara. She was the simple girl from the small, Southern Water Tribe. She was the girl who liked to do her hair the same, idiosyncratic way each day. She was the girl who had an unhealthy adoration for chocolate. She was the girl who liked to go dancing in the rain. She was legendary to him for that in itself.
And, to Katara, Zuko wasn't just the fire lord who saved the world, or the boy who taught the avatar firebending. He was just Zuko. He was the boy with a branded face, a broken past, and a wounded soul. He was the boy who had pulled himself up from the bottom of the ground, and made something for himself. He was the boy who fiddled with his topknot in the mirror for thirty minutes. He was the boy who hummed in the shower. He was the boy who was a hidden romantic at heart. He was legendary to her far beyond the bonds of his prestigious title.
They would mark down in the history books and pass down the legend of Avatar Aang, Fire Lord Zuko, Katara, Toph, Suki, and Sokka who saved the world. They would put who the thirteen-year-old child took out the fire lord, coming back a century later. They would mark that Zuko and Katara took out the ruthless Azula, and how Zuko gave his life to protect Katara. But, they'd omit why he did it, they'd omit how legendary the group's friendship was. They'd axe out how they'd became a surrogate family, and remove how deeply, and purely in love the Romeo-and-Juliet, seemingly-star-crossed lover-esque couple fell. They would expunge the most legendary parts of the story of all.
