This idea just wouldn't leave me!

Sam stared at the house with a sad expression on his face. He knew he could never be part of that scene. He could never have a normal life. It was obvious he was cursed.

"Hello Sam." He jumped at the noise. There was Castiel.

"Cas...What are you doing here?"

"I'm the one that brought you back...because God told me to."

Sam closed his eyes.

"You should have left me down there to rot."

Cas sighed and stared at Sam with sorrow in his eyes.

"You don't mean that."

"YEAH I do Cas." Sam blinked back tears as he watched Dean. "How can I bring Dean back into this mess? MY mess?"

"If you don't go to him he'll continue to think you're dead."

Sam turned away.

"I know...but maybe...that's for the best."

"There's...another way, if you insist on not returning to him."

Sam turned back.

"You have my attention."

"I could erase his memory of you. Of his hunting life."

Sam stared at him.

"You can do that?"

Castiel nodded.

"I could have him think he was an only child and make him think he was raised by Mary and John Winchester until they died of natural causes. I could alter Lisa and Ben's minds for them not to remember you as well. I can also have him forget about me." That hurt Cas more than he wanted to admit it but brushed it aside. It was a sacrifice he was willing to make, for Sam.

Sam turned sharply at the window and saw the pained look on Dean's face. He's been through so much...He deserved rest and peace...he deserved to forget.

"He...won't remember me? Even if I talk to him?"

"No," Castiel said calmly. "That way you could still communicate with him and look over them but he won't know who you are."

Sam swallowed and then nodded.

"Do it."

Castiel stared at him with a serious expression.

"Are you SURE Sam? Once I do this there is no going back."

Tears fell from Sam's eyes.

"He deserves a happy ending. And if the only way he can get one is by forgetting me then and the hunting life then yes."

Cas nodded.

"Very well."

And just like that he was gone and Sam was once again alone. He stared at the window once more. It pained him too much, though, to continue looking.

"Goodbye Dean," he whispered and turned to walk into the shadows, alone forever.

That night Dean laid in bed staring at the cealing. He was afraid of going asleep. Afraid of having those nightmares again. Of dreaming what it was like for Sam in hell. Probably so much worse than his time.

He felt a cool breeze in the room and sat up quickly.

"Cas? What the hell?" Cas loomed over him gave him a sad expression.

"Goodbye Dean," he said, echoing Sam's words. Before Dean could protest he placed his fingers gently on his friend's forehead.

Everything went black.

Cas stood there and watched Dean for a while before turning to Lisa and doing the same thing. Finally he vanished. His work was done.

When Dean Winchester woke he would no longer remember Sam or Cas or anything that connected to his hunting life.

He would finally get his happy ending.
