"You've been acting awful tough lately, smoking a lot of cigarettes lately, but inside, you're just a little baby."

It happened again. Sam Puckett got into another fight for the fourth time this week? Why? No one really knows. Sometimes someone looks at her the wrong way, sometimes it's what someone says, or sometimes, most times, it's because she just needs to take her anger out on something. When she was younger, in high school, she had Freddie Benson to beat up on and harass daily. But as they got older, they finally understood that it's not healthy to be treated this way by someone you love. Yes, love. To them, it's not a romantic type of love so much as a friendship type, but to others, they knew the truth behind every insult and smirk crossed between the two frenemies' path. Freddie loved Sam Puckett, and Sam loved Freddie. Not that they would admit it. They parted ways after high school, their old friend Carly going off to a performing arts college, and Sam and Freddie left to share the city of Seattle, while trying to communicate with each other as little as possible. Because that's how they live.

Neither of them knew that the other had started to smoke cigarettes to ease the pain. Neither of them knew that the other spent most nights lying in bed awake with salty tears staining their pillow as they try to figure out why they let go. Neither of them knew that the other wished for them to be by their side as much as they had. Because they don't want to admit it.

"It's okay to say you've got a weak spot, you don't always have to be on top. Better to be hated, then love, love, loved for what you're not."

It happened again. Freddie Benson and Sam Puckett bumped into each other at the local coffeeshop. They chatted about their lives, how Freddie does some tech thing and Sam is a chef, and they ordered their coffee and talked for some more. They both tried to hide the excitement of the other one's presence in their eyes, but it didn't work. Freddie invited Sam back. But she refused, making up some lie that there was a big dinner at her restaurant tonight. Why? Because she's Sam Puckett. She's not weak, and will not give into her old habits. Because she understands that it's not good to treat someone you love that way. Because she doesn't know that he longs for her touch, whether it be pain-inflicting or not. Because that's the way the go about life. Not giving into their instincts, because in their world, it's better to be remembered as the one the other hated, rather than the one who broke their heart.
