She was a witch, Hailey knew it and for the first time in her life, she truly wished she wasn't. Tomorrow or the next day she would be getting the letter, the letter excepting her to Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry. It was a day, many children couldn't wait for but it was a day Hailey dreaded.
All her life Hailey had lived in a muggle neighborhood… the friends she had, had been her friends her whole life. She was eleven years old now and she would be starting school in September. In September she would take the Hogwarts express and go to that magical boarding school where she would spend nine months. Nine whole months without her friends, she didn't know how she would live, of course she would make new friends but… it wouldn't be right, she didn't want to make new friends, she didn't want to go to Hogwarts with her own kind. What would her parents think, she wondered if she told them that she didn't want to go. They would make her, Hailey admitted, they wouldn't care and she needed to learn how to use her powers. She was a pure blood witch and had been only two years old when she had shown her first signs of magic, she couldn't let her parents down by telling then that she wished she was a squib. It didn't make a difference because she knew she wasn't a squib and her family had been going to Hogwarts for centuries.
Unable to sleep, Hailey stood up and looked back down to her friend's bed where her best friend slept peacefully. This was one of the last times she would sleep over at Lily's house; it was one of the last times she would sleep at any of her friend's houses for nine months.
While she would miss all of her friends, Lily mattered the most… The two girls were nearly inseparatable, they were rarely seen apart. Hailey felt bad looking down at her friend, they told each other everything, absolutely everything, Lily held no secrets from Hailey but there was one, Hailey thought guiltily, she had been forced to keep it from Lily. Lily didn't know that her best friend was a witch, she didn't even know about the world as Lily was a muggle. A muggle, Hailey repeated as she slid open the sliding door and stepped out on the deck. Lily had believed that her best friend was home schooled and Hailey had yet to report that she would soon be leaving, she had meant to tell all her friends, but had put it off.
From Lily's deck she could see her own house, it was big and white, with big windows and tons of balconies, big, green trees formed a bath up the walkway.
None of her friends had ever been inside her house, Hailey sighed, not even Lily, they couldn't go inside because her house may look normal from the outside but inside was full of magic.
Frowning, Hailey proper her elbows on the rail and rested her chin in her hands, closing her eyes. She knew she had to sleep, but she knew it would be impossible. There was a soft thump and a hoot as the owl landed beside her.
"You know," Sighing again Hailey opened her eyes to look into the shinning face of her own small screech owl, Wingdom, "If Lily sees you out here, I'll have some serious explaining to do." But she reached out to stroke the owl's glossy feathers. It was a nice summer night, perfectly warm, the stars shown bright in a cheerfully clear sky.
