Crazy Old Cat Woman

'Sir?' It was the fourth time in an hour that Jack had had to get up from in front of the TV, where his favourite cartoon show was blaring, to tend to something Sam needed.

'I'm coming Carter.' He groaned inwardly and stomped across the room.

She smiled sympathetically, 'Sorry, I know you are watching your show and that I'm being a pain but could you get that book down for me?'

Jack got the book down wordlessly and handed it to her.

'Thanks… oh and could you open my pill bottle for me?'

Jack opened the bottle and tipped a couple of tablets into his hand. He put the extra one back in the bottle and handed Sam the two she needed.

'Thank you.'

Jack smiled reluctantly, 'Okay? Anything else?'

Sam sighed, 'Jack?'

She was worried. She was worried she'd scared him off by depending on him too much and she really hated that she had to rely on him to help with the simplest things. Sam was so used to being independent and she only hoped Jack wasn't regretting agreeing to help her.

'It's fine,' he said.

Sam left it at that and let him get back to his programme.

She didn't ask him for anything for nearly two hours.

'Sir? I'm sorry,' she called.

He was smiling when he entered the room and sat down next to her.

'Yes honey,' he mocked.

'Could you get the newspaper in off the porch. I just saw Adam deliver it and your truck is outside and Mrs McClaren from across the street comes over to check on me if the car is outside and the paper's still on the porch.'

'Okay, 'cause that's not weird.'

'I think she gets lonely. She probably just wants some company. That and she thinks I'm just naturally clumsy.'

'Or she's just nosey.'

'Jack,' Sam giggled and nudged his shoulder with her arm.

He turned to face her and studied her face. 'I'm sorry about earlier, ya know?'

Sam nodded, 'I know. Don't worry about it, I mean I can walk and I made you get up and come in here so many times.'

Jack laid a hand over her arm and began rubbing small circles on her arm. Sam turned her body to face him and leant her head on the groove of his neck. He brought his arms up and around her and held her to his chest for a moment.

'I'm glad I'm here.' Jack whispered.

Jack felt her shake under he grasp and he knew she was laughing. She brought her head up and looked at him, 'Okay flyboy. Go get the newspaper.'

Jack groaned and pulled her back to his chest. He held her tighter.

'I'm comfortable,' he whined.

'Go! Unless you want Mrs McClaren to come over and grace us with her lovely spinach and meatball tofu.'

'She brings tofu over when she checks to see if you're okay? Shouldn't she be bringing a cell phone or a cop and not… tofu?'

Sam giggled, 'She's deranged.'

'Obviously.' Jack conceded, 'I like her. I might go take her over some of my omelette, what do you think?'

'Did I mention she's a crazy old cat woman who will kidnap you and torture you with her stories and crappy food.'

'Sounds just like you.'

Sam pulled away from Jack, 'You don't mean that!'

Jack looked serious for a moment, before breaking into a grin. 'You're right I don't… Although if you we end up spending the rest of forever together, you may go a little crazy…'
