It was easy to not think about Brooke while she was in New York. Out of sight, out of mind; it actually worked pretty well. But then she came back and was around all the time, and now he's face to face with what he tried so hard to forget about. Haley was worried about Carrie, about the late night skinny-dipping and her flirting, but she didn't see what was right in front of her; the thought of Brooke Davis made him crazy, like it always had and he was sure always will. She was great with Jamie, and she was so independent and strong, and Nathan couldn't stop thinking about her now. Everything made him think of her, and it disgusted him. He was in love with two women, and he constantly found himself questioning if he chose the right one or not.
When Haley said she wanted a divorce, Nathan fought the idea. He loved Haley with everything he was and wasn't going to let her go without a fight, but there was a part of him that wanted to just let it happen, just so he could be with Brooke. Not that he was certain she'd actually let him be with her. He had no idea how she felt, and that was the part that killed him. Maybe, if he knew she didn't feel the same, he could get over her. But what if she did? Then where would he be? Stuck in a complicated mess with his wife, trying to keep his relationship with his son alive even during the rough patch and trying to weigh the positives and negatives about being with Brooke. It made his head ache.
She was there, sitting beside him, drinking a beer and talking about the crazy adoption agency lady. "She was such a bitch," she said, shaking her head for the millionth time. "She didn't even listen to me. She just cared about what Victoria said." She was sad, he could tell, and yet the only way he could think to make her feel better was sex. Kissing her and tucking her beautiful brown hair behind her perfect ear and whispering that he loved her, that he wanted to be with her, all the while knowing that Haley was at home with Jamie, considering the pros and cons of fighting for their marriage. Therapy had been going well, but Nathan didn't seem to personally be getting anywhere; he still wanted to reach out and touch Brooke's soft skin, have her in his arms again.
"Hey," she said, her voice soft and scratchy with alcohol, "Are you okay?" She placed a hand on his shoulder and he ignored the little hitch in his heart, the way it fluttered and raced for her, skipping beats and pounding way too hard against his chest. He nodded and tilted his glass somewhat, watching the beer lean up against the glass like they were old pals.
"Yeah, it's just..." He looked up into her green eyes and knew, then and there, that he couldn't do this. He'd end up just hurting the two women who meant the most to him, and neither one deserved it. He loved them both too much to be honest with Brooke and caused her and Haley this kind of pain. He'd suffer in silence, just to protect them. "It's nothing, really."
She tiled her head to the side somewhat and he smiled the amazing Scott smile, dimples and bright blue eyes and happiness, even though it felt fake. "I promise," he said, patting her hand once before signaling to the bartender for another drink. She stared at him for a moment, then looked up at Owen, smiling as he leaned across the bar and kissed her.
