What's in a Name

Sometimes Danny wishes he had a different name.

This thought comes to him fleetingly
(late nights alone)
and he knows that its fantasy
(any mob case where the uniform whispers just that bit louder)
but it haunts him at times
(Mac's gaze on his back like an invisible tattoo he never got)
and he has to wonder if it's worth it.

Sometimes Danny longs to run, to escape from the city he loves and hates.
He's seen so much in his job, all the best and worst, that he thinks that he could be anywhere, and that would be alright.

Because he would be free.

And then
(Flack punches him in the shoulder with a grin)
he realizes
(Lindsey and him slam dunk a case)
with a grin
(Sheldon and Stella met him at Sullivans for drinks)
and he acknowledges
(Mac shares with him that quirky smile and he knows without words that he's made his boss proud) that there's nowhere else he'd rather be.

Messer or no.
