"I wanna go home Hawk…I wanna go home…"
----
"BJ is stable Hawkeye…they're taking him to Tokyo." Colonel Potter said entering the room, talking to the back of his head surgeon.
He watched his head go up and down waiting for a response.
His shoulder lifted as he inhaled and they slowly lowered as he exhaled, somberly he replied.
"Then back home." Hawkeye said simply.
"Yup, then home son."
Again he watched his body language as he couldn't see his face.
"Ya know something Colonel…I saw him fall…I saw him clutch his stomach and I saw him fall…my legs…ran as fast as I never thought possible…and when I got to him, he lifted his hand…and for the first time in years, I shook at the sight of blood…he was in so much pain ya know…his face cringed in agony. I know cuz he kept telling me how much it hurt…I cant remember what I kept telling him, but I remember looking at his face as I put pressure on the wound…his body jolted every time I pressed down harder…finally he grabbed my arm…and barely spoke through the pain… "I wanna go home Hawk…I wanna go home…"
Potter tried to stop the rambling. "Son…"
"He was bleeding to death, a bullet in his stomach, his best friend leaning over him and all he wanted to do was go home…I bet all he could think of was his wife and kid, sitting at home… it's crazy ya know…this war…I just…I wanna go home too Colonel…I mean is that so much to ask…why do I have to be here? Why for so long?....I mean first Henry…if Beej had died…Colonel…if he had died…"
"He didn't…" the Colonel began.
Hawkeye continued. "I don't know…I don't know how much more of this I can take…I just don't know anymore…I'm so done with this….all of it…I've seen enough, saved enough people, showed enough compassion…I don't think I can take much more of the death…"
ATTENTION! ATTENTION! WOUNDED ON THE HELIPAD! AND MORE COMING! YOU KNOW THE DRILL!
"I suppose we're going to find that out right now son."
Finally after a short moment of deep breaths he turned around to face his Colonel.
"Apparently so." He replied, and catching a nod from his CO, he knew what had to be done. What always HAD to be done.
Within moments, he started to run over to the ambulances now filling the compound, all the time thinking in the back of his mind, of another person other than himself that was going home.
