PROLOGUE.
Sirius stood outside the door of his compartment of the Hogwarts Express, he shook his head sadly and sighed as the last few students arrived with their parents.
"I'm sorry, Sirius."
Remus' voice brought him back to reality; Sirius frowned as he glanced at him. "What?"
Remus smiled tightly and shrugged. "I know you were hoping Lily and James would be here."
Closing his eyes, Sirius shook his head. "I was so sure they'd be here," he said dejectedly, "I kept telling myself that_"
"They'd just walk through the barrier."
Sirius nodded as Remus finished his sentence, "yeah, pretty stupid, huh?"
"Not really," Remus' voice was shaking as he nudged Sirius' shoulder. "Look..."
Opening his eyes, Sirius felt his mouth drop open in shock. James and Lily had stopped halfway to the train, their eyes wide as they focused on him and Remus.
Swallowing, Sirius shook his head. "It can't be them," he whispered, "It can't be."
Remus blinked, frowning at Sirius. "Why not?"
"Because we want it to be!" Sirius growled, his body shaking as a black haired boy, around eleven years old, walked through the barrier, pulling his trunk behind him in one hand while he was also holding the hand of a young black haired girl, who looked about nine, who held the hand of an even younger red haired boy, who couldn't have been any older than five.
"It's not them," it couldn't be, it had to be a trick.
"There's only one way to find out," Remus took a deep breath and shrugged, "Let's go."

James swallowed as Remus and Sirius approached them, his breath shook as he reached for Lily's hand, "Here they come."
"Sirius doesn't look happy," Harry said quietly, as he saw the angry look on his Godfather's face.
"He looks scary," Charles whispered, clinging to Harry fearfully.
Lily smiled down at him gently, "he just doesn't know it's really us," once they proved themselves to Sirius and Remus, there would be nothing for her youngest to be afraid of.
James smiled sheepishly, as Sirius and Remus stopped in front of them. "Moony, Padfoot, long time no see."
Remus' eyes widened slightly, "How do you know those names?'
"I was there when we invented them in our fifth year," James said with a shrug, "it's me Remus."
"You're lying," Sirius' scowl deepened, "tell us who you really are."
James sighed. "I am James Potter," he pointed to Lily, "and she is Lily Potter_"
"Enough!" Sirius snarled, "Lily and James Potter are dead!"
James grinned, his eyes gleaming mischieviously. "Do we look like ghosts to you?"
"No," Remus' expression was one of suspicion, as he stared at them. "But you could be Death Eaters in disguise."
Lily shook her head, "We aren't Death Eaters, Remus."
Harry rolled his eyes, when the disbelieving expressions didn't leave Remus or Sirius' faces. "Dad, just turn into, Prongs."
Remus glanced at him frowning, "What?"
"It's obvious isn't it?" He looked at Sirius and Remus and shrugged, "A Death Eater might be able to take on Dad's appearance, but they couldn't replicate his animagus form." Looking back at his Father, Harry smiled, "all you have to do is turn into, Prongs."
"At least someone is thinking clearly," Lily smiled at Harry. She looked at Sirius and Remus, "We still have a few minutes before the train leaves, why don't we go somewhere a little more private?" James was still an unregistered animagus, if he was going to transform, they couldn't do it in public.
"Fine," Sirius snapped, striding towards a quiet corner, away from the crowd of parents and students. James and Lily followed him, Harry, Charles and Siria were close behind them, with Remus bringing up the rear. As soon as they were out of sight, Sirius turned to face them, his arms folded as he focused on James, "Well, get on with it."
"I really hope you don't use that line when you're wooing the ladies," James said, flashing a grin at his best friend.
"Now!" Sirius snarled, his tone making Charles cringe at Harry's side.
Rolling his eyes, James sighed, shaking his head as he began to transform.
It was a sight Harry had seen many times before, one moment his Father stood before them as a man, and the next, he was a large, magnificent stag.
Remus' eyes widened in recognition, and he slowly began to smile.
While Sirius' face went white as he stared at James in shock, as he whispered hoarsely, "Prongs..."
When James transformed back, he pulled his two long lost friends into a tight hug. "I am so sorry," his voice was trembling as he pulled back. "I really am."
"Why didn't you tell us..." Sirius croaked, still gaping at James. "... We thought you were dead!"
"I know, you didn't deserve that. And I'm so sorry." swallowing, James shook his head, his gaze drifting from Sirius to Remus. "Not a day went by that I didn't want to..." He broke off, as he choked on a sob.
Lily smiled, reaching out to take her husband's hand. "We had to leave to keep Harry safe." She told them. "Voldemort was still alive, and the only way Harry was going to be safe, was if Voldemort thought we were dead, and the only way he was going to believe it_"
"Was if everyone thought you were dead," Remus finished, as he understood.
Sirius's anger returned, as he found his voice. "You should have told us!"
James stared at Sirius, surprised by his angry outburst. "We couldn't."
Sirius's scowled didn't waver, "Couldn't, or wouldn't?"
James' was breath shaking, as he shook his head desperately. "We couldn't," It had been too much of a risk to Harry's safety.
Harry swallowed, nervously clearing his throat. "We need to get on the train," he said quietly, when his parents, Remus and Sirius looked at him.
Lily nodded, placing a hand on her eldest's shoulder. "Harry's right," she looked at Sirius and Remus. "We can finish this discussion later," she said as she ushered, Harry, Siria and Charles towards the Hogwarts Express.
Harry leaped onto the train, Sirius was right behind him, with his parents and siblings following, and Remus once again, bringing up the rear. Ducking into the first empty compartment, Harry leant his trunk against the wall, and flung his arms around Sirius as he entered the compartment only seconds after him, he hugged him tightly. "It's great to see you again!" harry said, looking up into Sirius' face, he saw the anger melting away, and smiled as he felt Sirius' arms wrap around him in a gentle hug. "Please don't be too angry with Mum and dad," he whispered, snuggling into his Godfather's embrace. "They were just trying to keep me safe."
