Day Eight
"Je garde les yeux ouverts
Je n'arrive plus à comprendre ni à aimer mon univers
Je me méfie de tous ceux qui m'entourent, m'empoisonnent mon air
Je dois prendre des distances, faire le tri car je me perds
Je respire encore car j'espère"
-Sheryfa Luna "Quelque Part"
He trusted no one. He was like that all thanks to her.
Only once had Oliver ever tried to love someone and it had gone all wrong. After years of busying himself with Quidditch to keep his mind off other things, like girls, he had finally tried to go out of his comfort zone. He had asked his fellow teammate Katie Bell to Hogsmeade one time in his fifth year. Everything had gone all right and after a few more dates they had become a couple. They had stayed together for the rest of their fifth year. In their sixth year, though, Katie had let him go and had told him that she had actually had feelings for George.
She had used him. She had only wanted to make that Weasley jealous.
Oliver never felt so vulnerable, so foolish. He blamed himself for not seeing Katie's real intentions sooner. After that mishaps, he kept away from girls because he did not ever want to be hurt like that again. Yes, he had truly liked Katie – no, not loved, but maybe he would have with time.
So Oliver distanced himself from girls. Some people believed that he was a little too interested in Quidditch... He turned down every date and rejected every compliment that he ever received. Oliver was determined to stay away from those vicious females; his heart wasn't as tough as people thought.
That had all changed when he met her.
Astoria Greengrass.
In his seventh year, he went, solo, to the Three Broomsticks to have a Butterbeer. She, uninvited, took a seat opposite him. The Slytherin girl tried to engage him in conversation but he just replied shortly and uninterestedly to all of her questions. She didn't get discouraged by his obvious lack of feelings towards her and appeared at the same table during each Hogsmeade weekend. Oliver found himself counting down the days until those weekends and it scared him. He didn't want to be hurt again and especially not by a Slytherin.
He kept his distance from the hazel-haired girl and did not tear down the walls that he had spent years perfecting for a while. Soon enough, though, he found himself more afraid of losing her than being hurt by her. He took a chance, threw his heart out in the open for the second time in his life, and asked her out.
It was the best gamble that he had ever made. Astoria caught his heart and carefully took her time fixing it until it was as strong and brave as it had been once. She taught him how to live, how to love again. Who would have thought that a Slytherin would be the one to bring out the best in a Gryffindor? Astoria had had her own goal out of all of this; she wanted a lion's heart and she got it.
The song lyrics above belong to Sheryfa Luna.
Here's the translation(thanks tat!) if you cannot read French:
"I keep my eyes open
I can't understand nor love my universe anymore
I'm suspicious of everyone around me, I poison my own air
I have to put some distance, to sort out things, because I'm lost
I breathe again because I hope"
