Don't own, just love! ^_^

Mystery Urchin
by Mei

The child once wandered the streets in a lost, forgetful daze. His hair carried a tint of mahogany, his cheeks shone a bright crimson, his eyes were as blue as a raging sea before a storm, and his rough hands matched his windburned lips in fragility. He appeared to be about ten years old. A few passersby briefly mused over where he had come from. Perhaps the sly urchin had escaped from home, some reasoned. Some could barely hide their disgust at his lowly appearance and simply looked away. Yet there are always kindred spirits around, and they were the ones who tried to reach out to the lad. The unsuspecting citizens did not count on the pride of the poor. It was because of these attempts that the child gradually disappeared into the crooks and crannies throughout the city. Therefore, his purpose in Kingsport remained unknown to its citizens.

The search was finished before it had started. No one knew, attempted, or cared any longer.

No one.

"History...I'm beginning to agree that what's done is done! Overwith, finished! Don't you, Jamie?"

Caitie Roth slammed her small locker door in impatience. Having just finished history class, she happened to be tired of the teacher's 'incompetence'. Awaiting an answer and not receiving one, she looked up and instantly her dark eyes were riveted onto his intense gaze straight ahead.

She chewed on a lock of her dark violet hair in thought. Slowly, a sly, mischievous smile spread across her face. "Jamie Waite, I think you're the most handsome guy in Kingsport High and I wouldn't mind marrying you right at this moment, my love."

No effect whatsoever.

Her thin eyebrows raised in slight surprise at his silence, and an ironic chuckle followed. "Of course," Caitie muttered, purposely dropping her books on the floor. "I spit out my deep, inner feelings and he's got to be in la-la land."

Jamie became conscious a moment later, eventually shocked into it by the books' thump. He blinked in amazement at his surroundings and murmured urgently to himself. Realizing that Caitie was right next to him, he bent his head and whispered into her ear, "I've got to go."

"Go? In the middle of the school day?" Caitie lowered her voice, trying to hide her worry. "What's so important that you have to leave? And what was with that spacing out?"

"Sometimes school isn't everything." Jamie slung his backpack onto his shoulder, slightly waved at Caitie and swiftly shot down the stairs.

The bundle wasn't obvious in the middle of the street.

The color camoflauged it against its surroundings.

It was compact and neatly nestled against a fence.

But still, Jamie should've seen it.

Tripping over the bag, he sprawled onto the sidewalk, unhurt but nevertheless bewildered.

A soft wail came from the bundle.
---

The child was out of sight, out of mind.

Until someone broke his peace.

Just a half hour attempt. Awful sorry this prologue's so short, but I'm off to sleep. Opinions? I'd love to
hear them. ^_^ Confusing? Yes, I know. Sayonara!
