Author's Note: For Arisa as part of the Secret Santa. This is my attempt at humor. I hope you like it.
The house was decorated wonderfully with garlands and a wreath and even some holly. Obviously there was a Christmas tree, but there was no mistletoe. Digory felt it too grownup and entirely unnecessary. The only people here were his mother, Polly, and him.
"Come dears, gather round the piano." Digory's mother said.
"Yes, Mrs. Kirke?" Polly asked.
"Do you sing child?" She asked.
"Me? No. You do not want to hear me sing." She said, dismissing it.
"Come on Polly, it is only us. Go on." I said.
"Stop smirking Digory, it is terribly childish." She said. He did not understand that it was meant as an insult because he was, of course, still a child.
"I will do it." He said.
"You are probably a good singer." She said pouting.
"No, but I am also not a coward." He said and began to sing.
Joy to the world
The Lord is come
Let Earth receive her King.
Polly laughed and began to join him.
Let every heart prepare him room
And Heaven and nature sing
And Heaven and nature sing
Finally, Digory's mother joined in.
And Heaven, and Heaven and nature sing.
"You were both wonderful." She said
"I do not know. I heard something that sounded like a dying animal while we were singing." Digory said jokingly. Polly looked accusingly at him and then a scheming sort of smile graced her face.
"It might have been you." She said and Digory looked mock hurt. Then, in an act that Polly denied for years to come, they began to chase each other around the room while Mrs. Kirke laughed at their antics. Digory finally was able to tackle her to the ground.
"I am not going to let you up until you say it was you." He said with a grin.
"I already told you I was bad." She said and they all began to laugh because this had been the reason Digory had begun to sing in the first place.
"Since I have heard you both sing, we can now go caroling." Mrs. Kirke said and both children promptly got up and followed her out the door.
