Pearls are a naturally occurring substance, but the ones that are created without intervention are often imperfect, misshapen and discolored. Meanwhile, with relatively little effort, it is possible to produce pearls of an even, uniform quality, and with a little experimentation, can produce a colorful variety as well.

Man-made pearls are, in essence, created the same way as natural pearls. Both are created by the presence of an irritant which managed to lodge itself within the oyster's shell. The oyster defends itself by covering it with the same material it would use to construct its shell, essentially turning an intruder into part of its defense. With man-made pearls, the irritant is deliberately placed inside the oyster's shell, and a little supervision to make sure it isn't tainted by any extra debris.

Finding the right irritant can be tricky, though. Different irritants act differently in different oysters. Excitement is something than can generally be aroused uniformly, but only for a limited time. There needs to be an increasing level of irritation to get the same level of Excitement, you see. From there, we try and sort them into more complex pearls of emotion, which is where the tricky part comes in: as Diamonds, what part your job is not spent providing that irritant will be spent deciding which oysters will be segregated into which emotion beds. There seems to be a fairly deep divide between oyster genders, which is helpful, but can be fairly misleading. In a broad general sense, Lust is easier to extract from oyster men, and Calm is easier to extract from oyster women than contrariwise, but it isn't universal. The equipment is delicate, so please, pay close attention and don't mix an oyster which has no interest in the female form in with those who do. You should be able to tell, once the Excitement production begins to taper off, which people will be Hopeful, or Lustful, or Serene, and match them with the correct option of emotion bed. Once you have an idea, you should motion for one of the Spades, who will transplant the oyster from one bed to another for harvesting.

The Spades are also there in case an oyster should begin to awaken. Please be prompt if you notice any of them displaying signs of consciousness: the memories of the other world tend to taint the emotions they produce, and again, this equipment is delicate. Should an oyster begin to speak, make eye contact, or attempt to move from their bed please be prompt in getting the Spades to remove them. We can put them back to sleep here easy enough, and they'll end up right back at your gambling tables within a day or two. I know you'll be worried about your production quotas, but if the exposure to consciousness is long enough, the entire batch can be tainted, and that will have a severe negative impact on whatever emotions you've managed to produce that day.

And, although there has never been an instance of this my entire time as Carpenter, should the oysters be disrupted somehow, and begin to wake en mass, don't panic, and don't attempt to interact with the oysters. What I tell you three times is true: this equipment is delicate. They cannot move from their beds without being released; if you stay close to the Spades and leave the area in a timely manner, no harm will come to you, and we can deal with the problems without lasting damage to either you or the gambling rooms.

Well, that's it. Welcome to the Happy Hearts Casino, ladies.
