What would Colonel Broyles do if he felt compelled to help Olivia?
Olivia could see a bit of light under the cell door. An object was slid through the narrow slit.
"Put this cuff on and keep it out of sight at all times." That sounded like Broyles. Olivia got down from her bench and place the communication device in her ear.
"I will be in touch." When he left, it had become dark once more.
Some time later, Broyles came again. Something was slid under the door.
"Put on these contact lenses. They will let you see virtually anywhere, without leaving that cell of yours. Sit tight. When the time comes, we're gonna take a little trip."
Another day must have passed before Broyles actually communicated through her cuff.
"It's time. Decide how you want to appear, we have a way to project your image physically outside. Whenever you are ready."
"I am ready."
Olivia kept her eyes closed during the transition. When she opened them, she found herself standing on the deck of a ferry boat. There was no one else around.
"Dunham."
Colonel Broyles just appeared in front of her. Apparently he was a projection too. He was dressed in civilian attire. It made her feel at ease.
The way he was staring at her made her a bit self-conscious.
"What?"
"Forgive me for staring. I couldn't help notice how different you look."
Olivia looks down at her virtual self and saw what he saw. She had on a knee length black cocktail dress, and her hair had reverted back to its original shade. Interesting technology. Was this what she wanted to look like?
"Oh. This is my natural hair colour." That wasn't what he meant obviously.
"I thought you might like a scenic tour." The sun was setting over the horizon.
"It's breathtaking. Thank you."
They lean on the railing looking out across the water.
"Listen, Dunham. I respect the Secretary, but I don't condone his actions. He can be cruel to his enemies." He only paused a moment to take a breath.
"I don't consider you my enemy. It's why I can't stand idly by, watching him torture you."
"Are you going to help me get out of here then?"
"You know I can't, but I can do what I can to boost your morale." Olivia knew that would be his response.
"We are almost out of time. Remember the teachings of Sun Tzu and you'll be just fine." Olivia smiled.
"Know your enemies and know yourself?" Broyles was becoming more impressed with this woman.
"Good. You read the Art of War. I hope you don't think of me as the enemy now." He takes a few steps back.
"Not any more, sir, I won't."
Before she is returned to her cell, Broyles calls her again.
"Have you been to Broadway? Maybe next time, we can catch a show, on the house."
"Yeah, I'd like that."
Broyles turns to walk in the opposite direction. As the colonel fades away, Olivia could hear him sing.
"Midnight. Not a sound from the pavement. Has the moon lost her memory? She is smiling aloneā¦"
Lance Reddick said in an interview mentioned how in Season 3, we might see more of the alternate Broyles. This was written in response to what he said.
