Right before the GAang – plus Suki – left the Boiling Rock, Zuko managed to catch Mai's eye.
When your eyes say it
She stood, knives in hand, black eyes locked on the ex-prince's amber ones. Zuko's eyes held hers for another moment, before she turned away in favor of a guard attempting to sneak up behind her.
That's when I know that it's true

Why would Mai do that for them… for him? After all he had done to her… Broken up with her – and through a letter - before he left her, breaking her heart, while he went off to join the Avatar…

Then again, he knew, that if their situations were reversed – which he would rather have than their present one, with him sailing off to safety, leaving her behind to face the consequences – he would have done the exact same thing for Mai.
