Prynne. Sin.

In pen: nothing alike.

In tongue: similar in sound, but not definition.

In heart: one and the same.

Perhaps the time, the first time, that I strayed from my path was when I took that dishonest vow. When I began to turn from the truth. When I feigned love--

No. I was honest even then. I never loved that lonely man. I made that no secret. When I became a Prynne, I remained a Hester.

Across the sea, a world away, I would find love. I would lie for this love to save it from the hypocrites who named it sin. I would become one of those same hypocrites. I would fall from honesty, fail at motherhood. I would lose everything I have ever possessed in return for a small child, an elf-child. A precious Pearl.

I will not regret it.
