"Gee, come on. It's time for bed," Lindsey wrapped her arms around his torso and he sighed. She was right, and no matter how much work he had to do, it could wait for morning.
"Okay, fine. Is Bandit asleep?" he asked, looking in the direction of his daughter's room.
Lindsey nodded and buried her face in the crook of his neck.
Gerard smiled and wrapped his arms around his wife. He felt happy. The years he spent with Lindsey, he wouldn't trade them for anything. They were better than the whole rest of his life, which wasn't saying much, because the rest of his life sucked. But still, it had it's perks. But nothing came close to how happy and whole he felt with Lindsey.
He stood up and they went to their room. She stood up on her toes and kissed him before going to the bathroom. He went over to the dresser with a smile.
He pulled off his shirt and threw it into the dirty clothes basket without looking. But, surprisingly, it landed in the basket anyway. He pulled his pants off too and threw them the same way he threw his shirt. Gerard looked absent mindedly through his drawers until he stumbled across something he forgot was there.
With wide eyes, he pulled out his Part Poison mask. He didn't know why he hadn't gotten rid of it yet but it still felt like the legend of Battery City and the Killjoys were alive as long as he kept the mask. And as long as the Killjoys and Battery City were alive, he was helping save people. And that was one of the best feelings he had, was helping save people. People died enough by natural causes, nobody should commit suicide. It wasn't just adding to the teenage body count wither. It felt wrong. Every time he read about a suicide, he wanted to cry. No one should feel that way about themselves.
"You know, I can practically see the smoke coming out of your ears. What's wrong baby?" Lindsey asked, walking back in the room. He turned around with the mask in his hand and her eyes were filled with understanding.
"There was another one today, wasn't there?" she asked, not even needing to ask about what it was. They both knew he read another suicide story today. But he nodded nyway. She walked over and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"You can't save them all."
"No, but I can try Lynz. And I do, every day."
"I know baby. But being superman can wait until tomorrow. You look like you're going to fall asleep standing up."
He yawned and she just raised an eyebrow. She was right, she always was. She just knew him that well.
He walked over to the bed and draped the purple blacnket over his legs. He looked over at his wife and he held his arms out to her. Instantly, she walked over and laid down with him. She curled up on his chest and he pressed his cheek against her forehead.
She was out within seconds but he couldn't sleep for a bit. All he could think of was the people out there who needed him. Then he though of his daughter, With a smile, he swore to himself and to God as his witness, that he would do anything he could to protect her. There was just too many horrors out there in the world and there was no way in hell Bandit was going through it all alone.
He looked down at his wife and smiled. He would protect her too. No matter how much she insited she didn't need protecting from the world, he knew she liked him being overprotective.
Gerard fell asleep with a smile on his face. He liked being the protector.
He put on hand over Lindsey's hip and another over her shoulder, protecting her from the horrors of the world even while he slept.
