Chapter 1: Mudblood

"I don't need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!"

Lily blinked. Was there something wrong with her hearing? Severus Snape; her best friend, her first friend, just called her the foulest name in the wizarding world? There must be some mistake. The only thing she was trying to do was stand up for him, help him, that's what friends are supposed to do. All she was trying to do was to get Potter to back off and leave Severus alone. Lily felt tears swelling up in her eyes, threatening to spill onto her cheeks. No; this is Lily Evans, she didn't cry - especially, not in front of others.

"Fine", Lily said coolly. "I won't bother in future. And I'd wash your pants if I were you, Snivellus."

With that, she turned on her heel to make a quick exit, but was stopped by one loud – not to mention, obnoxious - voice.

"Apologise to Evans!" James Potter roared at Snape, his wand pointed threateningly at him.

Lily stared at Potter, sceptically. She couldn't believe that someone would have the nerve to make threats at anyone after what he had just done. After all, it was Potter who started all of this.

"I don't want you to make him apologise!" Lily screeched, rounding on James. "You're just as bad as he is!"

"What?" yelped James. "I would never call you a mud- a you-know-what!"

"Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you've just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can – I'm surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head of yours on it. You make me sick, Potter!"

Lily spun around swiftly and hurried away, before the tears started to fall.

"Evans!" James shouted after her. "Hey, Evans!"

But she didn't look back. She couldn't look back now; the tears were streaming down her face. She just wanted to be alone in her dorm.

"What is it with her?" said James, oblivious to the tears falling down the retreating Lily's face. He was trying and failing to look as though this was an insignificant question of no real importance to him.

"Reading between the lines, I'd say she thinks you're a bit conceited, mate", said Sirius.

"Right", said James, who glanced around furiously for something to take his anger out on, "Right."

There was a bright flash of light, and Snape was once again hanging upside-down in mid-air.
