A white and blue squad car zooms down the Belt Parkway towards Kennedy airport.
The highway was relatively quite because most of the city's citizens had not
returned. Four weeks have passed since the outbreak ended. The city was nearly
deserted. The few people present in the city are cops, two of whom were in the speeding
squad car. In the car is a slim blond female cop named Aya Brea. The driver is
a veteran black male detective named Daniel Dollis. In the front passenger seat
is a Japanese scientist named Maeda.
The scientist stares at the reflection of the sleeping
police woman. Questions of love raced through Maeda's mind. Should
tell her, yes? No? Maybe the man soliloquized. I should tell her
now, he thought again. Ever since he met the beautiful policewoman, he knew
she was the one. Not there was any other before her. He was never good with
women. Maeda had always been shy, as a boy he didn't have many friends. As an
adult he locked himself in labs and his heart pour into research. His passion
was evolutionary biology. But during his stay in NYC the scientist's mind was
focused not on research but on her, like it was now. Looking
at his love's beautiful reflection, he realized it was time to express his
feelings for her. With all his courage Maeda blurted out, " I LOVE
YOU!"
"WHAT!" the driver yelp in surprised letting go of the steering
wheel. The driver jerks his head to the side and stares at his companion. What
the hell did Maeda just say? , Daniel thought. The scientist stared back
blushing red with embarrassment Baka! Wrong person, Maeda thought.
Stammering Maeda muddles a series of incoherent phrases" Um Daniel not
you-um-I her-Lov..." Struggling to form words in those brief seconds of
staring; Maeda notices that no one is driving. Forgetting his mistake Maeda
screamed, " The road!!"
"Shit!" Daniel replied as he reaches back for the steering
wheel. The tires screech as the car turns and slams against the traffic
divider.
