Everything hurts.

Her legs, her arms... but most of all… her heart. The sound of his voice should have been an echo by now, yet it was still very present and it felt like the moment it might start to fade, it came back with a vengeance.

Rich, deep, smooth, calm … and so cold. Her body shivered at the memory.

All too soon, yet not soon enough, team Kakashi (with Yamato subbing in for their sensei) arrived at the front gates of Konoha and started to make their way to the Hokage tower… to report a failed mission. A failed mission to bring back a rogue ninja… and a friend.

The pain within a certain Kunoichi was nearly too much to bear. She was still weak… and useless. Another spasm of pain tore through her causing her to bite her quivering lip to silence a sob. She kept her eyes to the ground as another tear fell. She was in no shape to face her superior and neither was her long time teammate and friend.

His normal sunshine of a smile had been blocked by dark clouds of similar self doubt that filled herself. She wouldn't dare look at him for she felt that she was the cause of his pain. Her and that stupid promise two years ago… her and her pathetic feelings… her being weak.

The stifling silence was finally broken when Yamato cleared his throat before speaking.

"I believe I can take it from here," he began," We had a long journey and you are all young and need you rest. I'll report to Lady Tsunade. You are dismissed."

She almost let out a sigh of relief. She could go home. She could be alone. She glanced up to see her blonde teammate looking at her. Her breath got caught in her throat. The guilt was too much. Looking away quickly, she turned on her heel and began a quick pace to her house. She couldn't help but feel his eyes on the back of her head the whole walk home.

Author's Note:

WOW!

Ok so this is a story swap between Writing-OnMy-Heartstrings and myself. She no longer has the time in her life for this project so I'll be taking this story into my own hands. I am greatly honored that she has trusted this onto me. She will more or less be my beta for the first several chapters.

I was a reader and now I'm the writer so I hope I can do these characters justice. Please leave a review!

Updates should be every 2 to 4 weeks depending on my schedule and feedback.
