Shougo sees Saki as a fragile girl. Not because she keeps forgetting her classmates' names (and sometimes his) but because she always keeps silent, bottling her emotions inside every time she is teased by their classmates in elementary. Shougo notices how the small girl does not even try to take a single step to solve her problems.
Being a silent (busybody) keen observer that he is, he decided to lend her his notebook to encourage her to make an effort to change her self. A stepping stone to help her find the solutions to her problems. It may be spoon feeding but if it could move her gears into something better, it would be more than enough to make his thoughts at ease.
Saki was puzzled when she saw the notebook. Saki doesn't recognize the handwriting nor does she know that it was Shougo who lended it to her. But the simple action has wormed into her heart, making her warm all over.
Ah, there is someone out there who I could depend on. She tries to hold back the tears threathening to fall from her blurry eyes as she grips the notebook in her hands tightly but not nearly enough to crample its sides and edges. Since then, Saki has an affinity for reliable people.
So when Saki receives the math handouts for their summer homework from Shougo (who reasons that he had nothing better do and was bored) after a group study session at Kaori's house, it triggers something inside her. She remembers someone left a notebook on her shoe locker. She finally learns the truth behind the mysterious notebook and the person she's been wondering for so long. It was Shougo Kiryuu all along.
She can't help her feelings from bursting within her with full force. "So it was you, Kiryuu-kun" she says, her voice somewhat quiet but loud enough for Shougo to hear. "That was the first time someone did something for me".
Shougo's eyes soften at her, hands itching to wander close and fingers aching to touch and caress the small girl's tresses, to pat her lightly in the head. "Later." He says instead, turning back on his heel and walks towards his way home.
"Kiryuu-kun!" She shouts, her voice full of glee and delight. Shougo halts his pace and looks back at her. "Thank you for this" she says as she clasps the notes close to her. "And back in elementary school. I hope I can keep counting on you!"
"Idiot."
When Shougo arrives back home, he opens his drawer where his elementary school stuff is stored. He peruses the notebook he had lend her. He doesn't remember how he got it back or if she was the one who returned it to him. At the last page he reads a short message neatly written by her. Thank you. I hope I can meet you soon.
"Took you long enough." He whispers as he traces her words by his fingertips.
He calls her that night.
"Sleep well and don't be late, Saki"
A/N: No Beta. This is heavily based from episode 9. I hope you enjoyed the Shougo x Saki pairing as much as I do! :)
