"My co-workers are a bunch of assholes." Jisung grumbled.
Jaehyun sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You said that about fifteen times tonight, Jisung."
"It's true!"
"Well then, tell your boss. Or the person who's handling your internship."
Jisung glared at him with one eye. Jaehyun had chocolate brown eyes and his brown hair was swept to the side in an extremely attractive manner, looking every bit the rugged, handsome college student that he was. His steadfast, calm yet smoldering gaze caused every college girl to swoon as he glanced at Jisung with an amused twinkle in his eyes.
Jisung was only twelve going on thirteen, but he had to take an internship to earn money for his family. Jaehyun was quite a bit older- and he was already venturing out into the working world.
"What internship are you working on, hyung?" Jisung took a gulp of apple juice.
"Well, it's not an internship. I actually work there."
Jisung raised his eyebrows. "What do you do?"
"Some office stuff."
"What kind of office stuff?"
"Just- stuff." Jaehyun stood up abruptly. "I got to go. Bye, Jisung."
"Bye."
Jisung checked the address on his phone. Yes, this alleyway was the correct one. But where was Jaehyun? He had asked his hyung to meet him to do their homework together after work.
His hyung had agreed, telling him that he would meet him during his lunch break near his office in the alleyway. But his hyung hadn't showed up yet and now it was starting to drizzle.
Jisung texted Jaehyun again. Where are you, hyung? It's starting to rain!
His phone beeped as Jaehyun answered. I got loaded with work. I'll meet you there as soon as I can. Go and get shelter in the building on the right of the alley.
Jisung growled. The rain was pelting down now and his phone screen was getting wet. He blinked through his wet fringe and glanced around at the buildings. He wasn't sure which right his hyung meant.
How would Jaehyun know where he had entered the alley? Where was his right?
Argh, his hyung was so confusing! He looked around again. There was a white building and a mall near the alley.
Which one should he go into? He made a split second decision and dashed into the white building on what he thought was the right of the alley.
He blinked as a wave of heat hit him. There was a cozy fireplace at the end of the room. Plush, white couches surrounded the fireplace, covered with cream and pink cushions. Several doorways opened off from the sides of the room.
The walls and ceiling were pristine and white-tiled and there was a woman dressed in white sitting at a desk. She looked at him over her glasses and surveyed him up and down.
Jisung smiled ruefully at her. He knew he must look a sight, sopping wet and dripping water onto the tiles. "Hi, sorry, I'm supposed to meet my friend here."
"I see." she said coolly. "May I know who your friend is?"
"Uh, Jaehyun. Jung Jaehyun."
"Oh, well that's all right then," she said, her frosty demeanour melting slightly. "Would you like me to give him a call?"
"No, it's all right." Jisung replied quickly, remembering what his friend had said about being loaded with work. "I don't want to disturb him."
"Very well then. Perhaps you'd like to wait? Would you like a towel?"
Jisung moved forward to take the fluffy white towel with a nod of thanks. He went over to the sofa, but didn't sit down, worried of spoiling the expensive-looking leather.
He toweled dry his wet hair as the fire warmed him, taking off his blazer and trying to dry it using the heat from the fire. When he looked around, he saw that there was a woman wearing a white coat mopping the wet spots that he'd left on the floor.
He felt bad and just as he was going to text Jaehyun, a man wearing a white lab coat like the type that doctors wear came out through one of the closed doors. He carried in his hand a sheaf of papers which he passed to the the woman at the counter, saying, "Here you are, you know what to do with them-"
He looked up and saw Jisung watching him. He had a long, angular face, a straight nose and defined cheekbones which made him look dignified. His pale skin, dark eyes, thin, sallow cheeks, pursed lips and carefully styled coal-black hair suited him. Jisung would be lying if he said he wasn't handsome.
Jisung noticed that his hands were long, slender and graceful as he ran a hand through his hair.
"Who are you?" he asked.
Jisung bowed respectfully. "Hello, I'm just waiting for my friend, Jung Jaehyun."
"Jaehyun, did you say?" The guy's face broke out into a smile. "I'm Doyoung, Jaehyun's friend. So have you done the assessments yet?"
Jisung assumed Jaehyun had told him about his work projects. "I haven't, no."
"Oh, well do you want me to help you with them?"
"I don't want to bother you," Jisung said swiftly.
"Oh no, these assessments are of critical importance!"
"Uh, thanks, but no thanks."
"Ah I see, you want to wait for Jaehyun to help you? He might be a while." Doyoung raised his eyebrows at Jisung's straggly hair, damp shirt and soggy blazer.
"I was waiting for Jaehyun in the alley." Jisung explained, lifting his wet fringe above his eyes. "Kinda got wet."
"Are you cold?" Doyoung asked in concern.
"I dried up pretty well." Jisung tried for a smile despite his obviously damp appearance, trying to stop shivering.
"Here." Doyoung handed him a mug of hot chocolate. It had whipped cream, tiny marshmallows and cocoa powder was sprinkled over the cream.
Jisung took a grateful sip. It tasted great, hot and sweet, the melted marshmallows in his mouth sweet pulpy bits. "Thanks so much. You really don't have to bother with me, you know. I don't want to be a burden."
"Nonsense!" Doyoung smiled warmly at him.
All of a sudden one of the doors burst open and Jaehyun flew out, throwing a brown jacket over his white lab coat which somehow- melted into a shirt and pants.
"Miss Kwon, would you tell them for me that I have to go and meet Jisung?" he said as he crossed the room.
"Will do-"
"Hyung!" Jisung called to him.
Jaehyun stopped dead in his tracks. He turned to look at Jisung, his mouth dropped open in shock. "J-Jisung?" he stuttered. What are you doing here?"
"Uh, this is where you told me to wait?"
"No! I told you to go to the building on the right!" In a few strides, Jaehyun had walked across to Jisung, frowning. "Doyoung, you're not-"
"I am not what?"
"You weren't supposed to come out or meet Jisung at all!" Jaehyun ran his fingers through his hair in exasperation.
"And why not?" Doyoung asked, hands on his hips.
Jaehyun whispered something into Doyoung's ear and Doyoung's eyes got wide. He murmured something back to Jaehyun and Jaehyun glared at him.
"Well, how was I supposed to know?" Doyoung demanded. "You didn't tell me!"
Jaehyun slapped his forehead and mumbled a curse under his breath.
"What?" Jisung asked, worried. "What did I do wrong?"
Jaehyun looked at him bleakly, and then turned to Doyoung. "Do we have to do it?"
Doyoung gave Jisung a sympathetic look. "Yes, we do, I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry about this, Jisung. I really didn't want you to go through this." Jaehyun clutched at his hair.
"Go through what?" Jisung was starting to be really concerned now.
Doyoung patted Jisung's shoulder. "Don't worry, it doesn't hurt."
"That worries me!" Jisung stood up off the couch. "What's happening, hyung?"
Jaehyun put his arm around Jisung's shoulders. "It's okay, Jisung." he sighed. "Just come with us, okay?"
"Wait, hyung-" Jaehyun dragged him through one of the doors off to the side and dragged him down a long, white hallway.
Doyoung placed his hand on the wall. He removed something and tapped Jisung's wrist, leaving no visible mark. "Visitor's pass." he said. "Or you'll get incinerated by the walls."
"Are you joking?" Jisung asked in astonishment, forgetting his anxiety for a second.
A flicker of a smile appeared on Doyoung's face. "No, there are hydronickle sensors which trigger the paranormality of-" he stopped when he saw the confusion on Jisung's face. "There are sensors along the walls, so if you aren't registered inside our building system, you will find yourself subject to some very unpleasant experiences. If you have the visitor's pass, then you can go around without going through that. It will erase itself once you leave the building."
"Impressive." Jisung said despite the clammy feeling rising in his stomach.
"Thank you." Doyoung took his hand and pulled him gently down several twisting corridors with Jaehyun following behind.
"Wait a minute." he held up his wrist to the wall and something that looked like a ray shield- like those that you see in movies to prevent people from going through- popped up. Doyoung wrote something on it with his finger and it turned red. "Come, Jisung." he held out his hand to Jisung. "You have to hold on to me, or you'll get electrocuted."
Jisung hurriedly grasped his hand and they stepped through the ray shield. It felt like a thin sheet of gauze but when they passed through on the other side, he stared as he saw that they weren't in the blinding white hallway anymore.
They were now in a hallway the same colour as the ray shield, a bright red. Doyoung's lab coat had also turned from white to red, identical to the colour on the walls. Jaehyun had shed his brown coat and his white lab coat was the same colour as Doyoung's.
Doyoung pulled him along the corridors and went in through a door which had been cleverly painted to blend in with the background so that you wouldn't notice it.
The room they entered was warm and cosy, with a fireplace at the end and squashy armchairs, beanbags and sofas placed all over the room. The floor was thick and carpeted and felt soft under his feet.
Settled near the fireplace in the most comfortable chairs sat a few people.
"Hi, hyung!" one of them called brightly.
"Hello, Haechan." Doyoung steered Jisung towards them.
It was hard to see in the dim glow of the room, but the person whom Doyoung had called looked much younger than the other four sitting next to him. He had a bright smile on his face- that much was visible- which he directed at Jisung.
The other four all looked about Doyoung and Jaehyun's age. One had curly black hair- it was hard to tell- and he was lounging in an armchair. He looked the oldest and had an air of maturity about him.
The person sitting next to Haechan on the couch looked to have blond hair, though that may have just been because of the flickering light from the flames, and he inclined his head at Jisung.
A very long-legged man sat on Haechan's other side. His legs seemed to stretch on for quite a distance and he seemed to have brown eyes and brown hair, like Jaehyun.
The last person was sitting on another armchair, one close to the fireplace, so that the firelight splayed on his face, allowing Jisung to see his perfect features clearly. He had a straight nose and intense dark eyes. His cheekbones were incredibly prominent, as was his jawline as he sat observing Jisung. Dark hair was cut back in a choppy hairstyle across his forehead and he looked like a combination of an angel sent from heaven and a bad boy from who know's where. He stared at Jisung with that smoking gaze, his face looking even more chiselled and sexy in the firelight.
"Yet another person falling for Lee Taeyong's perfect charms." The long-legged guy called out jokingly.
Jisung blushed- was it that obvious that he'd been staring?- and looked away.
"This is Park Jisung." Jaehyun introduced.
The one who looked the oldest sat up straighter. "Jisung, your friend? Hello, Jisung. I'm Moon Taeil,"
"I'm Yuta." the blond guy introduced himself.
"Johnny."
"Lee Taeyong." the smoldering guy inclined his head slightly.
"So what are you doing here, Jisung?" Haechan asked. "Have you done the assessments yet?"
"What assessments- you mean my homework?"
"What? No, I meant the tests to-"
"You are going to take the tests, right?" Yuta interrupted.
"Well, no, not exactly…" Jaehyun muttered.
Instantly, the atmosphere in the room became tense.
"Jaehyun, if he's not taking the tests, then why did you bring him here?" Taeil leaned forward, gripping the sides of his armchair.
"I didn't mean to!" Jaehyun protested. "It's Doyoung's fault! I was supposed to meet Jisung in the alley outside to do work but then I got loaded with- that… thing- and it started to rain, so I told Jisung to go the building on the right and he didn't go into the mall, but came here instead and then Doyoung came out and thought he-"
"Hey, hang on a second!" Doyoung interrupted, "How is this my fault?! You didn't tell me he wasn't taking the assessments! If I see people in the building that I don't know, I assume they're fresh blood!"
"Calm down." Taeyong ordered as Jaehyun opened his mouth to retort. "You know the rules-"
"You're really going to brainsweep him?!" Haechan burst out, jumping out of his chair.
"Haechan, don't get upset." Taeil said severely, relaxing into the armchair. "You know this has to happen."
"Brainsweep!?" Jisung was flabbergasted. "What do you mean brainsweep?!"
"Exactly what it sounds like." Johnny answered.
"You can't!" Jisung was so shocked he couldn't speak.
"Yes, we can, and we have to." Jaehyun said sadly. "I'm sorry, Jisung. Don't worry we'll only remove the memory of you coming here and meeting them, okay?"
Jisung wasn't much comforted. "What if you remove more than that?! Isn't brainsweeping extremely experimental? What if you remove my entire memory!?"
"It won't come to that. Our technology is highly advanced and we have people who are very skilled in this area." Jaehyun's mellow voice succeeded in soothing Jisung slightly.
"I'll take him down to Dream." Haechan offered.
"Yes, great idea, Haechan." Jaehyun said quickly. "Come on, Jisung." he steered him out the door as Doyoung and Haechan followed.
"I know what you're thinking, Jaehyun." Doyoung murmured, giving Jaehyun an exasperated yet fond look.
"Please, Doyoung, don't tell." Jaehyun pleaded.
"All right, all right, I won't say anything." Doyoung looked at his watch. "I have to go. Bye, Haechan, Jisung." he patted Jaehyun's shoulder as he left down the corridor.
"What does he mean?" Jisung asked.
"Shh. Haechan, you know what to do." Jaehyun winked. "I'll see you later, Jisung. Just follow Haechan, all right?"
"Does brainsweeping… hurt?" Jisung asked hesitantly as they walked down a bright yellow corridor which had magically appeared after Haechan had conjured up the ray shield and turned the colour to the duck yellow.
"No, not at all." Haechan reassured him. "In fact…" he looked around and lowered his voice to a hoarse whisper. "You don't have to worry about it at all." he winked and opened a camouflaged door to a small, circular room painted a soothing peach.
There was a comfortable chair like the one dentist's use in the centre of the room, tilted to a comfortable level and the lights were dimmed. A desk was in the corner and a computer and several tools were on it.
Haechan patted the seat. "Just make yourself comfortable, Jisung. I'll get Renjun."
Jisung sat down as Haechan left, and then stood up again. He waited until he was sure Haechan had gone quite a few steps down the corridor before he cautiously opened the door and looked around.
Haechan was nowhere in sight. Jisung quickly stepped out of the room and hastened down the corridor. He realised quickly that he had no idea how to get out of this place but he had to try and delay the brainsweeping for as long as possible until he found a way out.
He stopped. Haechan was stepping out of a door in front of him; luckily his back was to him. Swiftly, Jisung started pushing at the walls, hoping to uncover a hidden door.
Now another guy was stepping out next to Haechan. Jisung's shovings become more violent and desperate. He was being blocked from view by Haechan, but sooner or later, Haechan would move and he would be spotted…
There! Jisung's frantic pushings had finally hit home and he stumbled into the doorway just in time.
He slammed the door closed and leaned against it, breathing a sigh of relief as he shut his eyes.
There was a small squeak.
Jisung's eyes shot open. There was a desk in the middle of the room as well as two long tables lining the sides of the room. Tubes filled with different coloured liquids were set up on the desk as well as different instruments and there were boxes covered with cloths on the long tables along the walls.
A person was sitting at the end of the table. He had light brown, almost blond hair and big, round eyes. He had babyish features and a small snub nose as well as big, bright eyes. His face had a childish, innocent look to it as he stared openmouthed at Jisung, two tubes filled with bright coloured liquid in his hand.
"Sorry!" Jisung apologised hastily. "I didn't know there was anyone in here."
The boy looked at him with a frown. His general appearance was rather childish and he looked like a baby. He tilted his head at Jisung, his mouth open slightly.
"I'll just go." Jisung said quickly. "How do you get out of this building?"
"Who are you?" the boy asked in turn.
"I'm uh- new." Jisung lied. "Must have taken a wrong turn. Can you tell me how to get out of here?"
"What's your name?" The boy repeated, setting down the tubes.
Shit. "Uh- Jisung."
The boy's face relaxed into a half-moon smile. "I'm Chenle. Sorry, I'm a bit awkward with new people."
"That's okay. So, can you tell me how to get out?"
"You need to- hold on." Chenle lifted a finger to indicate that he would be a moment and touched his ear.
Jisung heard a distinct crackling noise and then Haechan's voice. "Attention, all Dreamies-"
"Don't call us Dreamies." another voice interrupted.
"What would you rather be called, Jeno-hyung? Anyway, this is an emergency. We have someone that needs to be 'smoothed' and 'selected' that's loose in our department. His name is Jisung-"
"I have him, hyung!" Chenle gabbled excitedly. "He came into my study! Jisung, stop!"
Jisung had tried to dash out the door but was suddenly shocked, quite literally.
"I warned you." Chenle sighed, standing up. "I'll bring him to the room."
Jisung lay on the floor, trying to catch his breath. The shock had been more intense than anything he had ever felt before and a flash of light had blinded him, his muscles cramping simultaneously and turning to useless jelly.
Chenle walked over to him and heaved him up by the elbow gently but firmly. Jisung leaned into his support, his legs still wobbly.
"W-What was that?" he stammered, still having difficulty speaking.
"A simple electric shock by a jellyfish that I upgraded. It's still a work in progress though."
"Really?" Jisung stumbled along with Chenle holding onto him. "Seems strong enough."
Chenle let out a hoot of laughter, a sudden high-pitched dolphin screech that shocked Jisung, but in a different way. "You're funny. No, it's definitely not anywhere close to what it needs to be yet."
Jisung tried to run away, but Chenle maintained a tight grip on his arm. For his size, Chenle was surprisingly strong. Or maybe it was because Jisung was still feeling weak from the shock.
"There you are, Jisung!" Haechan cried as Chenle dragged Jisung in.
There was another guy there, wearing the bright yellow lab coat. He had dark brown hair combed carefully and he was very slight, with narrow shoulders and small eyes. His face was pleasant and friendly but he also looked a little irritated, probably due to the fact that Jisung had caused so much trouble.
"Jisung, this is Renjun." Haechan introduced. He was nice enough to hide the annoyance he must be feeling.
Jisung was going to apologise, but when he thought of the brainsweeping, the words stuck in his throat and he just gulped.
"Thank you, Chenle." Haechan said and with a nod, Chenle left. Jisung held on to the wall to steady himself.
"The last time someone tried to escape, he knocked over some of my undeveloped chemicals. He hasn't left the hospital since." the guy called Renjun said impassively.
Jisung's legs wobbled even more and Haechan had to reach out and grab his hand to prevent him from falling. "Don't scare him, hyung. Jisung, come and sit down."
Jisung tried to make a dash for it, but Haechan had a firm grip.
"I don't want to be b-brainswept." Jisung wailed.
Haechan hugged him. "Don't worry, Jisung. Honestly, don't worry. Renjun-hyung, don't judge him, he's twelve."
"I'm turning thirteen." Jisung tried to calm down his nerves.
"And I'm not judging." Renjun went over to the desk and put on a pair of lab goggles. He typed a few things into the computer and it switched on with a 'beep' sound. He started to prepare the tools and equipment needed.
Haechan squeezed Jisung's hand. "Look, just keep calm. Jaehyun asked us to do something to help you so we will." he gave Jisung a shadow of a wink. "Come sit down."
Renjun had set up a big floodlight above the chair. Jisung knew it was effortless to resist and he sat down. Renjun disappeared out of sight but Haechan squeezed Jisung's hand by the side.
A gas poured out from the floodlight, a soothing, aromatic fragrance that calmed him and before he knew it, he didn't know anything else anymore.
