Mary and Colin were twins. She was the older twin by twenty minutes. They were not only twins but best friends as well. Their mother, Lily, died when Colin was born and their father loved and adored them both, but their uncle, adored Mary while he hated Colin. He blamed Colin for Lily's death.
One day when they were three, Archibald (their father) took them shopping. They went into a flower store. "Look Mary," Colin whispered excitedly, "a seed of mommy" Mary looked. It said L I L Y.
"Daddy's birthday is coming up," Mary said, "and what a surprise it would be if we grew mommy back" Colin pocketed the seeds as their father came up to them. "Mary, Colin how about some lunch" "Great" Before Archibald could ask them where they want to go they both said their favorite restaurant" at the same time and thankfully their favorite restaurant was the same.
"Uncle Neville," Mary asked when they got home, "do you have the key to the garden. Colin and I want to surprise daddy for his birthday" Neville smiled at his niece and handed her the key. "Take care not to lose it dear," he said, "and make sure you keep it with you at all times. Don't let the boy hold it"
Neville always referred to Colin as 'the boy'. It hurt Mary that their uncle was so aloof to her brother, but she dared not challenge him on it for fear he would take it out on Colin and be harsher then he already was with poor Colin. "Thanks uncle Neville," she said and she and Colin raced downstairs"
Outside Mary handed him the key. He opened the door, handed her back the key and they then read the instructions on the packet. "We have to plant her in the ground. Why don't you dig the hole" They planted her, fed her, watered her and talked to her everyday.
Finally Archibald's birthday came. "Your gift is out in the garden," they told him and led him to the place she grew. But all they saw was flowers. Lily flowers. Colin started to cry and when Archibald asked him what was wrong he told him all about their plan.
Archibald started crying too. "Colin, you and Mary gave me the best gift ever. Two children who I love so much and who I see loves me so much. Don't cry my children. This is the greatest gift and the best birthday ever."
