We are Britains!
"What are you thankful for?"
"Murder."
John frowned, looking up from his book. "I'm serious."
"Oh, John, so am I."
"Right," John muttered looking back to his book.
"Why do you ask?" Sherlock said, after a long while of comfortable silence in the flat.
"What?" John asked, looking up again.
"I said," Sherlock said in an annoyed tone, looking away from his microscope,"why did you ask me what I was thankful for."
"Oh." John folded the edge of his page, closing the book. "Tomorrow's Thanksgiving in the U.S."
Sherlock stared at him blankly.
"Please tell you know what Thanksgiving is," John said.
"I know what it is, but I don't see why you're talking about it." Sherlock looked back to his microscope. "In case you forgot, we live in Britain, not the United States of America."
"I know that," John griped, opening his book again. "I was just asking is all..."
"What are you thankful for?" Sherlock asked, after another considerable stretch of silence.
"Me?" John asked, looking away from his book once again. "Uhm. Family, friends... Uhmmm..." He frowned. "I suppose getting the chance to fight for my country in Afghanistan. Er, getting to... help," he said lamely, "you put away criminals. Just... you know."
Sherlock had been watching him, but now looked away again with a simple "dull".
John muttered something along the lines of 'sorry I'm boring' as he turned back to his book once again.
"I'm thankful for my blogger, for whom without we wouldn't have any clients," Sherlock said, after yet another period of silence. John looked up again, although, this time, without agitation. "Apparently," Sherlock added, only now just looking up.
"Apparently?" John echoed.
"Yes, you claim that we wouldn't have clients without your blog."
"Oh."
Sherlock sniffed in disdain, once again looking back to his microscope.
"I'm thankful for you, too, Sherlock," John said quietly, breaking the new silence that had overtaken the room.
"I know," Sherlock said after approximately thirty seconds that the clock could be heard ticking. His voice was bored and he said it on the offhand, but John caught the meaning (what did he call it with Sherlock? Because it surely wasn't sentiment) behind the words.
John smiled slightly to himself, looking back to his book again.
Just a little Thanksgiving Day ficlet, even though the Brits don't celebrate Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers! Thanks for reading!
