The Memories That Will Haunt A Man
A Maximillion Pegasus OneShot
They say the memories that will haunt a man will often be the worst. He lay there without moving for awhile. The only sound to be heard was his shallow breathing echoing in the black room. It was her again. The memories would often break the mental barrier he worked so hard to keep up on nights like this. Nights when the moon vanished from the sky and gave way to monstrous storm clouds that seemed to eat the light itself. He remembered every smile, touch, smell that had to do with his lost love, and it ate him up inside. Half of him wanted to be purged of these thoughts forever; the other half wouldn't give them up for the world and all its glory. It was on nights like these that all his failures would rise up against him and beat him down with their metaphorical fists. His dream of getting her back had been shattered long ago when he lost to the small boy. It was true he had fame and fortune. But what are these things without anyone to share them with? He had no true friends and he knew it. His security team was just that: security. They used to fear him, but now they just tolerate him.
He rose from his bed without really knowing why. Something just told him to get up. Now he often wonders if that had been fate itself whispering in his ear, wanting him to remember it all, to beat him up with his own memories. He did know fate to be cruel, so it would not surprise him if the previous was true. He walked over to the balcony doors and stood there gazing upon the ocean, the lightning reflecting off the rippled surface of normally calm waters. He stood there remembering his lost love: the chance meeting, the first kiss, the engagement. The one memory that haunted him the most was the wedding. It was a small ceremony in a little chapel on a hill. It was what she had wanted. It seemed like as soon has the priest had said "You may kiss the bride" that she fell ill. "A mysterious disease" the doctor had said. "No known cure" The words had cut him like a knife. He had chosen not to believe it till the end. He had never cried so much in his life and has not cried as much since.
He wanted to end it all. He wanted to make the pain stop. But he knew she wouldn't want him too. He couldn't even go against her now, so many years later. The words that haunted him the most "Live for me." How could he? Without her his life meant nothing to him. Just fate being cruel by keeping them apart.
He turned away from the window and walked back to his bed. Back to the dreams of her that would plague his sleep for the rest of the night. Maybe, just maybe, for a short time in his dream world they could be together once again. They say the memories that will haunt a man will often be the best.
